SE Electra/Ultra speedo reads fast?
« on: January 16, 2006, 01:52:44 PM »

I have not checked with GPS or by watching the odometer to mile marker reading yet but my SEEG2 and an 06 Ultra I rode tested appears to read at least 5 mph fast (at least by the seat of my pance).   My 03 FBoy says "Harley Davidson certified) on the bezel and it (speedo) appears to be right on.  Does anyone else feel this way?  I did a search and found nothing other than the speed compensators by S&S and Dakota Digital that you can use to dial in your speed reading when changes to the bike have been made (mine is stock for tires, wheels, gearing, etc).   I know it may be anal (about the speed), but if the speedo is 5mph off by reading fast, your odometer would also be off 10% on mileage by reading more than it should be.  In this day of technology, the speedo should be right on.  Does anyone have real world experience with the S&S or Dakota Digital speed correctors?

Compared to the report from a GPS unit mounted on the bike when the bike's speedo reports 80 I'm actually doing about 75.  This variance will be smaller at lower speeds and greater at higher.

Do you get a few seconds 'delay' on the GPS?  I guess if you hold it steady at a certain speed for a few seconds, you would know.  That's the way my handheld unit works anyway.  Seems to be accurate w/ the speedo ,  haven't measured it at higher speeds (note: the aforementioned 'handheld' )  Har!   [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]   spyder

I have ckd mine with 2 GPS systems.  Mine speedo is 1.8 miles faster than actual. A little better than the 1800 which was 4.5 miles faster !

Boatman,

Try comparing your speedo reading to your tach.  With stock tires and gearing, the relationship in 5th gear is [Road Speed  =  RPM x 0.02428].

50 mph  =  2059 rpm
60 mph  =  2471 rpm
70 mph  =  2883 rpm
2500 rpm  =  60.7 mph
3000 rpm  =  72.8 mph

Boatman,

First off it should be dead on ... What I would do is find a local tuner with a dyno put the bike up on the dyno if the mph isnt exact I would then go to the dealer and let them figure out what needs adjusting or replacing.    Until you get to a point where its irrefutable the dealer is probably not going to do squat this will save you lots of aggravation and trial and error.

I have the S&S Speedo adjuster btw and it works great, just shouldnt need to be used on a stock bike to compensate for a error like your having.   it cost me approx 104.00 plus shipping and some dyno time to set it in correctly.   It goes in line just below your seat.

Unbalanced-My speedo may be correct but by the seat of the pance it does not feel as you are going as fast as the speedo is reading.  Maybe that's why they call them EGlides, this is my first bagger.  After I check with gps and it's off only 1-2 mph at 70 mph I'm not going to worry about it.  I was just wondering if anyone else thought their speedo was off.  Thanks for the good report on the S&S calibrator-will use that if it is indeed off 5-6 mph..

I have no official facts to back up what I'm about to share but here goes. I've had a fair amount of experience with radar speed detection devices over the years (spent a few years in law enforcement). Typically most US manufactured vehicle, i.e.: cars, trucks, motorcycles, will display a slightly faster speed than their actual groundspeed. Not sure if this is government mandated or an attempt by manufacturers to avoid damage suits in traffic citation cases. If you've ever driven through one of those mobile radar display units many local police departments set along roadsides to grow driver awareness, you'll undoubtedly notice it reads 2 or 3 mph less than your speedometer. This may account for your incorrect speedometer readings vs. GPS which is pretty much instantaneous recognition of position and speed. Trust GPS over mechanical everytime!

A racing buddy of mine who held a card for running at Daytona said on all the jap bikes that the speedo is off and the faster you go the more it becomes off and that this was built by design.   He did not know if it was a gov't issue but believed it had something to do it so you are probably not far off Ernie.  No facts here just passing on some general conversation a buddy shared with me.

Rode to the dealer last week and compared my speedo to GRC's road speed numbers.  Speedo compared to his #'s so it looks like I am alright.  Compared to my Fatboy, the feeling of speed is about non existant on the EGlide.
