Replaced Cam Tensioners.
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:44:23 PM »

Well, I've got 38,315 miles on my bike and felt that was as far as I could go without changing the tensioners. I was beginning to get nervous and I am very happy I didn't try to make 40,000 with it. I am no mechanic, so I had the dealership do the work. The bike seems quite a bit quieter and smoother. It may all be in my head but I can sleep better now. It appears as if the shorter one with 21641 marked on it was just about to go, the metal horns seem shiny as if they were hitting the chain and it is quit pitted. Both were grooved.

Did you replace your oil pump while they were in there?

Actually those look pretty darn good for 38K.  Much better than my bride's 2002 RK at 30100.

That's what I thought.   Must be a difference in chains?

What oil are you running. I inspected a set with 55k on them and they looked like new. Customer has used amsoil since day one

Larry I have to believe that the oil doesn't have as much to do with the tensioner wear as does the finish of the chain JMHO

Most of the time I use SYN3 but a couple of times I had them put in Lucas synthetic with a Harley additive. I thought the Lucas was a bit more noisy, so I stopped using it. I doubt the oil makes too much difference. Only the tensioners, pushrods and bearings were replaced. They left the oil pump in.

Now thee is a "penny wise and pound foolish" service.

All those missing pieces from the tensioners get in the oil pump and damage it. What possible reason could they give you for not replacing an oil pump that they removed to do the service?
