To Syn or Not?
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:43:47 PM »

I'm sure this has been beat to death but what does everone think about Syn 3 in all three holes. I've been told by another party that it should only be used in the engine. The old heavier stuff should be used in the primaries and trans. What to do??

Kenny, you will get as many opinions are there are members about their choice of lubricants.  I doubt if you will find many who suggest Synth3 in all 3 holes.

I was going to post the same question... I have used both Amsoil and Mobil 1 in the motor and found that the top end is a little quieter with Mobil 1 in my Sporty. Haven't tried it in the serk yet but will shortly. (just had a full service done before I bought it) I was more concerned with what to run in the primary and trany .. manufacturer and grade.. :nixweiss:

I run the same combo in my Triple Red SERG with the Mobil 1,  and I am very pleased with the quiet trans and the motor seems to run cooler.  :2vrolijk_21:

Syn 3 in crank and primary, GL in trans in all 3 bikes. No complaints but religious service intervals (2500). Never a problem.

I use AMSOIL 20W-50 in all 3 holes in my '09 SEUC and my '06 Road King Classic. Over 28,000 miles between the two, no issues. Been using AMSOIL products since late '70s with good results. Check out the following link, very informative.

Do a search on oil, there are many threads about this. I use Mobil1 in the motor and Red Line in the trans and primary. The Red Line is a great improvement over motor oil in the trans!

Just my humble opinion of course, but I'd like to answer your question with a question of my own.  When was the last time you got better results using a "one size fits all" product instead of products specifically designed or formulated for a specific use?  Yup, that's what I thought.

Using one product in all 3 holes is strictly a convenience thing, and needs to be viewed that way.  Yes, you can use the same product (SYN-3, Amsoil, Mobil-1, and any others that are supposedly formulated for use in all 3) without fear of drastically shortening the life of your bike.  On the other hand, you will likely find that using real gear oils in the trans will result in noticeable improvements in operation (noise levels, shifting efforts, etc.).  The primary is the least critical area in terms of lubrication, but the wet clutch requires an oil that is specifically formulated to work properly with a wet clutch.  I figure you can't go wrong there if you use a good automotive automatic trans fluid, since those products are specifically formulated to work well with wet clutches.

+1 on Syn3 in all holes. And, that's the way my SESG came from the factory.

I think you would see a big improvement in shifting with the Redline Shockproof Heavy in the trans! So much smother, less clunk!

Red line Tranny/Primary Syn3 motor

I have purchased red Line 20/50 for my next oil change. My deStealer Service Rep told me that RL Motor oil was too thin and would leak out of the seals and gaskets. Has anyone ever heard or experienced this?
