FLHTCUSE5 110 Motor Heat
« on: February 10, 2010, 01:23:36 PM »

I am about to take delivery on my 2010 CVO Ultra. I have heard that motor heat is a real problem. So far to reduce heat I have added the H-D Race Tuner (to tune somewhat richer), lost the CAT and added the V&H Dresser Duals (V&H said they woulkd run engine cooler than Power Duals) and I am adding a Lenale Fan. Any other suggestions or ideas on lowering engine temps?

The tuner and pipes will do the trick.  I don't think the fan is necessary.  I had one of the HD fans on another bike and it wasn't worth the trouble (or money).  Had to carry extra rubber mounts because they always broke!

Thanks for the input. I had the same experience with H-D Fan but have had a Lenale Fan for 3 years and it's great! Bought a new one from the MFG Len on ebay. less than 40% of the H-D Fan.

I like the looks and true dual nature of the V&H Dresser Duals. Better chrome than H-D and a lot cooler running.

Forget the fan. Just swap out the exhaust (my recommendation is a D&D Boss Fatcat 2:1 and if you have to have the dual look, add the ghost pipe) along with the tuner software and all your heat issues will disappear instantly.

Has anyone out there installed a second oil cooler? I bought a Jagg 10 row vertical oil cooler, but haven't installed it yet. Maybe this weekend. I also installed S&S SPO mufflers and a Power Commander V with the Auto Tune. Wow, what a difference that made. Runs much better and stronger.

I did the pipes and tuner, I also ceramic coated the pipes and trashed the CAT. Lenale does not make the oil cooler fan anymore. I used this fan from bigsky http://bigskyfan.tripod.com/. I put it on the AUX switch for city riding.

I have used the Jagg 10 row vertical with the HD Premium Cooler in series and it does help. Have it off for the cooler weather now but will reinstall it this spring.   Doc

I did the same mods as Trey767, but have the Lenale oil cooler fans as well as the cylinder fan. I turn them on and off manually, based on a fairing mounted oil temperature gauge via the AUX switch. I do a lot of touring, two up, and the fans are usually only used when stuck in traffic jams or stop and go driving on 90 degree + days. They work perfectly and will keep the oil temp below 230 deg. in all situations. The ETMS (rear cylinder cut out) never engages, while my buddy next to me often has an engine that sounds like it's about to jump out of the frame and oil pressure down to about 2 pounds. That can't be good! About 1 year and 5000 miles on the fans, no problems.

This sounds like a good way to spend some snow days.  How hard was the install and do you have any close-up pictures?
I rode with a guy that had an identical bike as mine and his was bone stock, mine has the cat removed, Fullsac cores, Ness big sucker, and dyno tuned with an SERT.
I was a little surprised to hear both bikes kick down to one cylinder at the exact same time when we came to a stop.
Maybe this will help me stay out of temps triggering the ETMS.

How ya doing Guppytrash?,
The install was real easy, both fans came pre wired with connector that matched up to the AUX power plug under the seat (controlled by the AUX switch on fairing), just remove horn, replace with fan assembly, plug in harness and you are good to go. Oil cooler fan was just as easy, remove stock chrome cover, replace with fan unit, run wire harness back to same AUX plug under seat, connect to plug with supplied HD 2 to 1 splitter. Horn fan has it's own local switch, so you can run only the oil cooler fan under lower load / temperature conditions. I understand that Lenale no longer sells the oil cooler fan, but the fan sold by Big Sky Fans is basically the same design, with the fans behind the oil cooler instead of in front. The also cost less.
I don't have to use the fans that often, but when they are needed, they keep me and my engine real happy!
Best wishes

I did exactly that on mine and the heat problems disappeared immediately.

I'm in total agreement about the first "must do" changes, lose the cat, A/C & exhaust, richer AFR via a tuner, but the fans are a real help in traffic jams and high temp, heavy load situations. Even with the modifications the 110 motor is still making a lot of heat and when your not moving it builds up real fast. Got stuck in a 3 mile back up on Cape Cod last fall, two up, fully loaded with gear, cops everywhere so no white lining, and the fans keep the oil temp no higher than 230 deg. with no cylinder cut out. They are a nice option when needed.

:worthless:

Any problems with the install of the fans or did everything line right up and fit correctly?
