Dyno Heat
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:07:15 PM »

I just got done installing fullsac 2.25 baffles in my factory cvo pipes, sound good on the kickstand. As I was removing the basani slipons I noticed the right side pipe  got so hot it was purple, behind the pipe the plastic strap that holds the wire harness was melted in half and the wire shield was also melted.I have a V&H performance header pipe and had it dynoed at the local hd shop,I was told it took 6 hours and almost 100 miles,my concern is it normal to get it that hot and what kind of damage is possible?

Several cooling fans are used during the dyno run. Other than not enough airflow to keep things cool or a lean O2 during the tuning may have caused overheating. If the tune is correct you should be running nice and cool now. I would ask the dealer to take a look at it so there's documentation on record. You probably only need new clamps. If you have any issues you will see it through oil consumption or a less than expected dyno power numbers. :drink:

I have seen this before.  Not enough cooling fans and inexperiences tuner, running the bike too lean too long.  6 hrs is a very long time to get a dyno curve.  With my new motor, new cams, new pipes it was all done by Brad at Freedom in 25 miles and less than 2 hours.  I would go complain and make them give you new pipes.

I had a friend here in Reno go through this with a local HD shop & they had to replace the new exhaust he had put on for the Dyno work with another new one they turned it so blue.

 :cherry:

Dyno tunes are tough on the exhaust system.   I have the V&H Power Duals and Rinehart mufflers on mine.   After the first dyno runs,  my left Rinehart muffler turned yellow/brown.  Discussions with another HD shop where they do quite a few dyno runs,  I was told that Rineharts are one of the worst about turning color when they get hot.

Their shop had to buy new replacement mufflers for some pissed off customers (mine had to also),  their solution was an extra set of fans in the dyno room set to flow straight onto the mufflers during dyno runs.

This seemed to solve that problem. :P

From what i have seen in the past heat damage will not show for a while,if it is hurt   later with some miles base gaskets will start weeping along with other gaskets, 6 hours for a dyno tune is well in line i have seen some of the top notch tuners take 12 hours,on a new bike which you have it takes 3hrs to set the throtle settings and a lot of your low end tunners dont do.

I'm starting to feel a little better,it's not like this is my first dance but this the hottest I've seen any of my bikes get. I called the dealer that did it today just to cover my azz and they assured me there shouldn't be any problems, but I signed papers stating they were not responsible for my pipes turning colors ,no big deal they were covered with heat shields and besides I put my stock pipes on with fullsac 2.25 baffles, hoping I don't have to get it remapped. Thanks for the replys Randy C
