TTS Issue
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:42:17 AM »

Taking the time to set up our second bike. The TTS I purchased will work with two bikes. Part # is 2000001 on the box, TTS module says SAE J-1850 VPW DUAL

Used the same computer to save OEM map on bike #1, loaded new map on bike #1. All went smoothly, no issues. This was a month ago.

Now ready for the second bike using the same computer, same cables and the same TTS. It reads the ECM no problem. Lock files says 2 slots, Vehicle not matched.  I set the command to save the loaded map. It asks me for a name and where to save the file. I give it a name and click save. It gives me error 50- Unable to Control J1850.

I shut down the bike, removed all cables. Shut down the TTS software. Rebooted the computer.

Tried again. Same issue. Shut down the bike, removed all cables and rebooted the computer again. This is the same computer I have been using for years to work with PC, SERT, SEST, TMax. Never a problem. XP Pro box

I went to the TTS update, Found updates, ran all updates, rebooted and tried again. Same issue.

Brought out laptop used for recording data runs. Same issue as above. error 50- unable to Control J1850.

Any help with would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bike #1  2010 SESG   worked fine.

Bike #2  2010 CVO Convertible Softail, been messing with it most of the morning and finally gave up for now. Not trying to load a map, trying to save stock map first.

Update

Tried again last night. Went through all the same steps as above.

Tried to save the OEM map again, ECM reading fine as before, I gave it a name to save the OEM map and the download seemed to at least try this time. It got to 57% then stopped saying "Error-502 uploading ECM"

Very strange!
You might want to give Steve Cole a call also.

Thanks Mike

Yep...  haven't seen this one before.  I don't know Steve's number but I did just send their sales staff an email hoping they will forward to tech support.

Nice brain teaser. Don't know if it is in the firmware for the second VIN or not. Just thinking out loud.

Don't think I got one that was used by anyone else either... the box lid was sealed, about ripped the box up opening it. It just won't save the stock map, reads the ECM fine. Not going to do anything else until I get that stock map saved. With my luck it's something stupid that I forgot.  :nixweiss:

Are you using a TTS supplied USB interface cable? Problems can occur at this phase with non TTS cables. A very frugal (cheap) friend had difficulty, borrowed my cable, install then proceded smoothly.

Tom

Thanks for the response

I am using the same cables as I have been using for the SERT and SEST. It also worked for the bike #1 upload for the TTS. Since the ECM info is being read it can't be the USB interface cable.

Was the first thing I looked at to be sure everything was working.

Gary with TTS just called me. I sent the log files to him. He will call me back in a few minutes once he gets a chance to review them. I will let you guys know what they find... like I said, probably something I am missing. The TTS is a fine product with years of experience under their belt. I've just got a quirk somewhere.

Update

So, I'm not going crazy. Seems there may be an issue with the new style digital speedo on the 2010 ConV and the tuning software. Also, they are not the only ones having this issue and seems that I am the first to call them about it although they've seen it before using aftermarket speedo's and other gear.

TTS is working with me to resolve this and good news should follow.

Guys at TTS are great!

I'm glad that #1, your not going crazy, and #2 you had the smarts to stop the process and contact TTS. Like you said, they are top notch and I'm sure they will find correct solution.
I'm sitting here looking at my 12" high stack of HD and TTS manuals for my SEUC and the thought occurred "Man, that a lot of info just to get two wheels with two cylinders working right!" Life has sure gotten complicated.

Good Luck and keep us updated.

Seems to me I remember a stack of data when tuning with carbs - and vacuum gauges, carb-stix, boxes of jets, needles, notebooks with clip settings...   :huepfenjump3:

Good point, but at least we were dealing with real parts that you could see and touch and the tuning process was fairly simple once you learned the basics.
Although I have keep myself up to date with EFI and digital controls on both motorcycles, auto's and in my career field of mechanical contracting, the vast amount of data transmission going on digitally between ECM's and sensors and CPU's being controlled by programs developed by others, that we can screw up with one wrong mouse click can be intimidating.
But I have to admit, most of this technology is quite impressive. The last time it only took me 35 minutes to reset the clock on the radio on my SEUC.

Just a little update of what we have been working on in the past has been with the digital speedo. We were able to chase it down to Dakota digital and have been working with them for a fix as the issue is coming from there end. It turns out that it is from there model #MCI-3006. There is a user option to turn a fuel level setting on or off and the manual states it should be left off. So there is a way to switch it off at least in there gauge and that has to be done for programming. It's our guess at this time that the new gauge in the 2010 has the same problem as we can see it happening from the log file that was sent to us. We are in the process of trying to track down who makes the gauge for the 2010 ConV but the quick fix is going to be to disconnect it during programming for the time being. The fuse that powers the gauge is going to be the easiest way we think but were just not completely sure on that yet. The problem comes in from the fact that all the comm on the buss needs to let the programing go on while not being interrupted and the gauge is not allowing that to happen. We are going to see if we can do anything with it but it may just end up that it needs to get disconnected during programming.

Hey Steve

I've called out to see if anyone has the shop manual for the ConV. Hopefully someone has it. If not, I'll need to get with my SM and beg.

We'll get through this and there's plenty of time, two weeks, before I will get the evil eye from the Wifey. It's her bike.

I appreciate what you and Gary are doing.  :2vrolijk_21:
