Motor Mount
« on: January 19, 2006, 09:58:59 PM »

Well guess what?  I knew I had a problem with suspension and was looking into new shocks (air ride type) and installed them (Platinum series like the Progressive IAS) and still have a problem.  It appears that the front motor mount is broken and compressed against the frame.  I sounds like the whole bottom is about to drop out anytime the bike hits a bump.  Terrible noise which made me think the jiffy stand spring I had to replace was too weak and causing a sloppy slack when in the raised position.  But no, it turned out the front motor mount is broken.  So I went to the dealer to get a new one.  They tell me the mount supplied stock is no longer available and a new one is on order.  I ask why?  Well there is a coherent problem apparently and the new one is going to be "a little rougher" but improved.  Okay, I ordered it up and will keep everyone advised after installation.

I have changed heads, pistons, and cams.  I have changed shocks and transmission.  Do you think that charging up this bike is stressing out the bike and its basic components, or I am just in a string of bad luck?  I am certain that I am close to having a bike that I will like but everything I do seems to create another problem.  Hopefully, it is just series of coincedences but I fear not.  Newton's laws haunt me.  Did I not consider the reactions to the simple structure of the bike when torque and HP were added?  I know I haven't done some of the extreme changes that I have read that have been done on this site.  I don't drive WFO on the top end, however I like to hurry to the 90 and 95 MPH level whenever the opportunity presents itself.  I know that is a lot of Torque through the gears.  But I would figure the design would be able to handle that issue.  Whereas a lot of high end high speed would be more stess.

What say you?

If I remember correctly the MoCo has a issue with motor mount supplier, as I know of a couple of friends that have replaced a motor mount on touring scoots.

On another forum there has been several people with 06 Touring bikes that have had the front mount fail.  The new one is a lot stiffer and one fellow supposedly went back to the dealer to get his old one back to put it back on.  They even showed a picture of the new vs old.  I think the old was rubber and the new polyurethane.  These motors shake so bad at idle it is a wonder the mounts hold up as well as they do.

Crawdaddy   In my experience, big inch motors do not rip up motor mounts. From what I read on this site, Hubbard has a pretty strong motor and I haven't seen anything from him about motor mount issues. Send him a PM and see what he says. IMHO you are dealing with a defective part and shouldn't see it for more than that

As far as stress on the components goes in my opinion you place far more stress running it up throught the gears getting to the 90 -95 mark than you do above that. As others have said there have been bad front mounts reported here.

It's about 30 days out for most shops to have the replacement.

My thought was that once you have leveled off, the stress is on and off while cruising up and down hills and turns.  Whereas, during acceleration things are locked into position.  I am alluding to the frame and mounting conditions, not motor internals.  Thanks for your post

VANAMAL,

Sometimes it's not that easy to tell visually.

VANAMAL,

the sleeve and mounting bolt can move enough to actually ground out on the mounting plate.

There you go, the answer. I'll try to post a picture later

I wonder if saturating it when changing oil filter affects the rubber.
