Any alternative antenna suggestions?
« on: January 20, 2006, 03:44:37 PM »

I finally got the relocation kit from Chicago Harley, one piece missing, the most important one of course. Anyway, has anyone used the rubber ducky antenna or is there any other alternatives to the stock 4' whip? Pictures are always appreciated.

Mike, you might try an "antenna" search.  There's been several threads on them here. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

My suggestion for an alternative is to forget about it all together and install XM.  It rocks, all day long anywhere you are riding and is nationwide.  But I do have the digital one in the faring too, but have not wanted to listen to normal radio since XM.

Second that Mrs. WeCVO  I also went with the faring mount under fairing. Sure cleans up the rear of bike.

Mike, I've got the Freedom Cycles Rubber Ducky on mine.  It works very well and looks much better.  For what it's worth, the FM reception is probably marginally better in my area than with the stock, and I've noticed the weather band is a lot better.  For about 11 bucks plus S&H, I thought it was a pretty good buy.

I've been using the Freedom shorty since last April, and I find that reception in all but the worst fringe areas is every bit as good as the whip.  The weather band reception is actually better, even though the antenna isn't supposedly even designed for that band.  The best part is that I haven't once stabbed myself in the eye or head since removing that ridiculous whip (just wait until you roll your bike under a low hanging garage door, catch the whip, and then have it snap forward and slap you in the head).  I considered one of the hidden antennas, but then you have to come up with a good looking solution to the antenna base mounting holes on the tour pak.  Short of filling the holes and repainting the pak, I haven't seen a solution I like.

I use a short rubber "Pep Boys" antenna. And when the tour pack is on I just fold it under. Reception is about on par with the factory antnenna and better the the antenna I put in the fairing (Tune Trapper).
