Trailer Back-Up Lights
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:28:33 PM »

I'm considering adding spot lights to the back end of my trailer so that when I'm backing up at night and can see a whole better.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and it would be great if you could share info about them...

1) What type of spots you used?
2) Placement location of them?
3) Do they automatically come on when shifting into reverse or do you have to manually switch them on?
4) Do they really help to see or not all that much?

Thanks for any and all info you can share.

My bike trailer has led lights mounted in the door frame. If you have a 7 pin wire harness on the trailer the yellow wire is your back up light feed.

The lower set in this pic are the backup lights.

My toy hauler does not have back up lights, but it does have high mounted flood lights. When the weather finally breaks I will be wiring these to the back up circuit.

If you are just thinking about adding lights, then I suggest you go ahead and do it, you will be glad you did.

On my bike trailer they do a good job and I am usually backing that around by myself. But with the toy hauler, whenever I am backing anywhere other then my driveway, I have someone helping. The flood lights do a fantastic job of lighting up the area behind me and more importantly keep my backup person in the light.

Here is an FYI for all you trailer hounds. If your trailer has a battery (and most with brakes do) you can use a standard automotive flasher between the #3 and #4, green & black pins to have "emergency flashers", if you ever have a reason to leave the trailer disconnected on the road.
