Have I missed a thread?
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:26:59 PM »

Have been looking for info on this but I may be missing it.

Is there anyone else unhappy with filling the gas tank on the SESG? There's something just under the gas cap that looks like a splash basket, for lack of a better term, and it keeps me from filling the tank. I can squeeze another half gallon in if I keep at it.  :nixweiss:

That's an issue many have mentioned since H-D went to the six gallon tank on the Touring bikes.  Unfortunately, many gas pump nozzles won't allow a slow flow, so with some it's almost impossible to actually get six gallons in a six gallon tank.  Also causes splash back, which I consider to be unsafe, but I don't remember hearing of any attempt by H-D to resolve the problem. :nixweiss:

I got one of these - McCuff "No Splash, No Spill, Motorcycle Fill"  for Christmas but weather hasn't cooperated (have I said lately how much I hate snow!! :D) and allowed me to try it out. This is supposed to allow a full fill up w/o the worry of over filling/spilling while trying to get the tank full.

Let us know how that works. I've become very proficient holding the trigger in my right hand suspending the nozzel slightly above the basket while using my left hand to lift the nozzels vapor/splash collecter to trigger fuel flow. Effective - yes, cool chick magnet posture - hell no.

I don't think it was his idea either (so it may actually work), but I couldn't resist when I saw his pic on the site. Just another way for him to make more $$$$$

Don't have the vapor/splash collector on most nozzles here, but if you put the nozzle all the way in the tank the cut off will activate before the tank is full. I've then had to hold the nozzle up to complete filling it and all depending on the nozzle and how stiff/sensitive it is it can be pain in the arse (splash back) at times.

True dat... now that they don't have a show I'm expecting him to be "pimping" anything somebody will pay him for. :(

It sure seems like a lot of work to have to pull out that little job, I would rather just go through the "cool chick magnet" method! :nixweiss:

Thanks guys...  at least I now know that I'm not the only one standing on the seat to fill this sucker.

This is how both the wife and I do it.  But we don't stand up (unless we're off the bikes).....we just do it while seated. :nixweiss:

Has anyone tried to modify this basket?  I've considered pulling the assembly and removing the basket with a cut-off tool, but I haven't had it apart before, so I don't know if that's feasable?

I'm not sure but I think the basket is designed to allow you to pump more gas into the tank before the automatic shut off kicks in.  Other wise, it's going to be kicking off at 2/3 tank and you're still going to have the same issue (like we used to have).

I think the states that don't have the vapor boots on their pumps don't have that problem.  If you're in a state that doesn't have the vapor boots, enjoy....it will not be long until the EPA requires them on all pumps.

For those of us that do have the vapor boot.....yes, it's a hassel filling a tank to the top.....but it's always been a hassel every since they came out with the vapor boot (even on the older tanks that didn't have the deep coller in the tank).
