Jack for the Convertible
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:09:52 PM »

During my recent alarm upgrade and some upcoming work on the exhaust I have come to terms with the fact I need to raise the ConV up to work comfortably and efficiently. I ruled out a lift because of space issues so a jack seems the way to go. I read more on the different jacks out there and decided to opt for one of the "premium" jacks for the stability factor. It's a short list; J&S and Pitbull. The Pitbull minimum clearance is 4 1/2 " and the J&S minimum height is 4". So I am leaning towards the J&S and it looks like the Convertible  barely has the 4" to slide the jack under without the need to build up a ramp. Has anyone tried using this (or any) jack on the convertible yet?

Mike

The only way I can get the ConV up with my jack is with a seperate 2x4 under each wheel and one for the jiffy stand.

I've had This one for several years. It's had Sporty's to Trikes on it, no balance issues, rolls nice with the weight.

One issue is the rubber cushions are thin and tear but mine has been through hell. The cushions don't like brake fluid and oil, makes them soft. It's light enough to move with your foot so you can get it under a bike with one foot while sitting on the bike. Still have to use 2x4's under softail wheels to get her up.

I have the YELLOW Sears jack (not the red one).  Not the best, but it does the job. Slides under okay. My only complaint is it can be twitchy when letting her down, caution must be used!!

Wiz / Gamma,

Thanks for that info. The Torin jack has a minimum clearance of 5.125". The yellow Sears jack has a min clearance of 3/5" and the J&S jack has a min clearance of 4" so I just might make it without the need for the 2x4's. I plan to order one soon and report back once I test it.

I also have the Craftsman Professional 1500 Jack and as Gamma742 said it comes down all or nothing. So far I haven't mastered the sloooww down mode.  :nixweiss:

I had a chance to try our pitbull (dyna model) this evening on our new FLSTSE and it worked great. Slid right under it with no problems, very stable while lifting and cleaning it.

Skiers;

If you don't mind me asking, what is a pitbull / dyna model. I'm also looking for a jack that will slide under the bike.

BTW... Love the pipes on your ride

Mickey,

The standard Pitbull lift will not work on the HD Dyna models due to the bottom frame design. The Pitbull Dyna model is designed to work on the Dyna models by spacing the lift brackets farther apart with a little different design. The best part is the Dyna lift works on other bikes like the FLHTCU and the FLSTSE. In our case the single lift works on 3 different bikes. I have attached the links for the Pittbull Dyna lift and the standard lift. The only negative thing I can say about the lift is about the bottle jack. The lift is a USA made product, the bottle jack is a china special.

I hope this is the information you needed.

Here are some pictures of our bike on the Pitbull Dyna lift. No boards needed for clearance.
