It appears that the gps unit is not fastened but only 'enclosed' in the zippered case.  I would foresee problems from vibration not to mention the ease of theft if you left it unattended.

I agree.  I have a Garmin Nuvi 650 which only cost me $140 from Wal-Mart.  It does most everything the Zumo's do but is not waterproof.  I will proably only use it for long trips where I don't know the route.  I wish this mount locked too.  Ram mounts make one that locks and is waterproof, but looks too bulky and cheesy.
