2010 Crimson Mist Black/Dark Slate $5,000 set-up fee ?
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:35:38 PM »

Hey guys.  I found your site awhile back after I bought my first CVO, an 07 SERK in Razor Red which I still love to death and ride everyday.  This weekend my wife almost wet herself while she came running up to me with a magazine open showing a picture of a Black CVO Ultra.  I've almost pulled the trigger a few other times on prior ones, the triple red one and this years Amber Citrus, but neither of them grabbed me deep enough to shell out the dough.  I know I'm blessed, and I'm even smiling as I type this, but where a lot of guys go thru hell with their women to get a bike, much less two, mine was like..you ARE going to buy that bike or I'm gonna lmao.../shrug.

So here's the deal.  I called around the 5 or so local dealers in my area, 3 already had deposits put down (I guess each dealer is only going to get 1 ?), one didn't answer the phone or return the call, and the last one said nope, ours is still available as of now with no deposits placed so you would be first inline.  I gave him some credit card info and told him to put 500 on it then, just to keep peace in my family of course  :P

He called back an hour later when I was outside and left a message saying, I just wanted to let you that the bike has an MSRP of $36,500 and that our set-up fee is going to be $5,000  :o  5K set-up fee?  holy crap, isn't that a little excessive?  I know the bike will be even more limited than a normal CVO in numbers built but, holy crap.  Do you guys think this bike will be 41.5k to 42k everywhere because of it's limited numbers?  If so I'll let my money stand as my wife wasn't joking around about me buying it lol.  I work hard for my money like most other guys, I just don't want to simply "give" it away.

I searched on google for HD dealer mark ups over MSRP with not much luck.  I did see a post saying that there was a thread on this site about MSRP dealers but I couldn't find it.  I live in the Seattle area and my wife works for Alaska airlines, I can fly for free most anywhere, to save 5K I would do it in a heartbeat.  Heck, 3 or 4 states away would be a sweet ride home anyhow =)

Any insight or suggestions ?  "Is" there a list of dealers somewhere that do sell at MSRP ?

There was another post on the site not long ago where another person indicated a dealer asking over $40k; not sure if it could be the same dealer or if there are a bunch of dealer's trying to make a killing on their dechromed CVO.  With only 999 planned, I seriously doubt anyone will find one for less than MSRP, but I also doubt that all dealer's will be as greedy as the one you mentioned.

What is the situation with your deposit, do you have a signed buyer's order with the dealership that guarantees you the right of first refusal, or are they just taking deposits with the idea of eventually selling to the highest bidder?  If you have something in writing giving you the right of first refusal, I'd leave the $500 on deposit but still call around to other places looking for a better price.  If you find one for significantly less somewhere else, it would be worth losing the deposit to cancel the original deal.  If you can't find a better price (highly unlikely if you make enough calls), you would still have the option of paying the original crook dealer if you really want the bike that badly.  Try dealers outside of the bigger markets.

No way....ever....would I pay over MSRP for a bike....and 5K setup is incredible.  There is always another bike....another option....

Kutter Harley Davidson in Janesville, Wi and Lake Shore Harley Davidson in Libertyville, IL are MSRP dealers.  I don't know if either has the bike you desire in inventory or not...

Wow, thanks Jerry, and this is what happened in the last hour....

The 1 dealer that didn't answer or call back ?  He called back =)  He said they're getting one as well, and no deposits were yet put down on it.  I asked him straight up how much over MSRP are you guys and he said $0.  He went on to say that in today's market bikes don't command extra value and to be quite honest, if a dealer wants a loyal customer base they sell their bikes at MSRP =)  So then I asked how about their set-up fee and he said we charge freight and set-up, $380 for freight and $500 for set-up.  Needless to say I called the other dealer back and told him to cancel my the deposit on the bike, I told him that a $5K set-up fee was a little to rich for my blood  ;D

Soooo....I'm happy...the wife's smiling like a cat with feathers in her mouth....the rain slowed down a bit so on the Road King we go, time for dinner and a drink and to start the countdown toward what looks to be a sweet *ss bike lol

I'm half tempted to post the dealers name that wanted the extra 5 thousand.....

Welcome Mr. Ed. Glad you were able to find our site and that you were able to find a local dealer willing to work with you. Just remember one thing, that $5000 that you "saved" by shopping around, is going to be spent in a flash if you hang around here. We love to help others spend their money  ;D.
Seriously, congratulations, you're gonna love the new ride.

Thanks Sadunbar, I "WILL" post the dealers name that gave me an honest price, it was Harley Davidson of Seattle located in Lynnwood WA, kudos to them for sure....

After listening to the message from the crooks again before deleting it, I didn't catch the first time the $500 dollar mark up they added to the MSRP either, they said MSRP on the bike was $36,999 not $36,499

Crooks = $36,999 plus $5,000 set-up plus WA tax of $3,780 for a grand total of $45,779

"Honest" Harley of Seattle = $36,499 plus $380 freight plus $500 set-up plus WA tax of $3,364 for a grand total of $40,743

For a difference of $5,036....

Wow.....

Why would you only be "half" tempted to post the name of that rip off dealer???? That is one dealer that should be shut down. I would want everyone in the country to know about them, so they did not bother to step foot in their door way!!!

Welcome to the site, this group will steer you in the right direction, never deal with a dealership asking over MSRP, there are good honest dealers out there that want your business.

Good dinner and great ride...

My hesitation was only because I didn't want to break any forum rules by doing so, the new guy always makes mistakes lol....

The rip off dealer was Eastside Harley in Bellvue WA....

Are there any notable highly recomended upgrades/changes you guys are in love with on the Ultras ?....you know...the kind a person should do hands down no questions asked that the majority here agree with ?...dont want to start any squables with the question...just curious...

I know I'll be searching for a good set of pipes and tuner...I've never been fond of the stock sound...

I put Vance and Hines true duals on my SERK with CFR slipons...simply LOVE their sound....not sure which way to go with an Ultra...

Wow.....

That's a lot of $$$$$$ to put towards chrome...LOL

Really, that money could be put to good use towards your accessories and after market stuff.  I hate dealers who jack people around. The funny thing is they don't realize what word of mouth can do to their dealership.

They didn't disclose that before they charged your card?

That's not "set up"........that's flat out robbery and I'd tell them I want to see their gun first.

Seriously, I'd not pay that.  Jon (Jonga on this forum) and I both got our CVOs (mine is the 10 SE Street Glide and his is the 10 Citrus and Burnt Amber SE Ultra Classic) for $1,000 under MSRP and a $500 in store credit rebate on the $700 set up (translated to $200 set up charge).

Somewhere on this board there's a thread that lists the MSRP dealerships......do a search.

That's a good looking paint job on that bike but it needs a lot of chrome.  As usual, the MoCo knew what they were doing to provoke the need for a lot of after delivery add ons. :nixweiss:

In my years I have learned a few things, that I can remember. First, you don't have to be the first to have one. Second, if you wait that same product it will be available all over and at a reasonable price in time. Third, these same products will be all over ebay, chopper exchange, craigslist, for much less in 6 months or less.
The 999 expected production number is NOT that low for a CVO. 2000 FLTRSE triple red 685, 2004 FLHTSE orange 1293, 2005 FLHTCSE teal 693, 2007 FLHTCUSE2 blue 744. And you can find any of these for sale, low/low miles for very low prices. Don't pay that to any dealer, you won't be to happy in a couple months when you see one of us got the same for 5k less.
