Question for those that have changed out bars????
« on: March 03, 2010, 11:08:16 AM »

Hey everyone,

I have a '09 Springer that I will be looking to change the bars on sometime soon. I am currently between going to some sort of a higher t bar setup or maybe some 12 or 14" apes. I have noticed that the factory risers are 1.25" and that the wider spacing of the springer risers limits bar selection. I have found on Carlini's website an adapter plate that bolts to the springer top and moved the risers inward to match other bikes so bar selection can be much wider. I was wondering if anyone has used this adapter plate and if there were any issues with it? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks.

I havent changed the bars out on my 07 springer, its not such an easy job as the wiring runs inside the bars, i did change my bars on an old dyna and then ran the wires inside, it took a few hours, i cut the wiring loom under the tank near the harness connector as I thought it was easier than disconnecting all the wires at the hand grips, when fitted i resoldered all the wires back together and put heat shrink over each connection and over the whole loom for protection, certainly not an easy job, i am so gratefull the ergonomics of the 07 cvo fxstsse was designed for me perfectly..........best of luck,  there are a few here with apes,   do a search in our springer section you will probably find enough info to go on!

Its a lot easier to get the connectors out of the multi plug under the tank rather than cutting wires.
But just remember to make a diagram of which wire goes to which hole before starting.

Have you been successful in finding apes that work?  I also have an '09 Springer that I was looking into putting apes on and haven't found a chrome set that works and that I like.  Can you post item numbers and/or pics?

How's this for coincidence! I just got my bike back from changing bars. I wish I had done this two years ago. I now sit upright instead of hunched over like a jockey. There is no pullback riser for the Springer, as covered in previous posts. The third set we got worked with slight grinding under the clutch master cylinder. I have an '08. The process is extremely labor cost intensive due to the internal wiring. I will start a new thread with the information and part numbers. Here is a pic to give you an idea.

I am thinking of having a set of custom 1-1/4" bars made by brcustomcycles.com . I am taking the bike in for a 113" build on Saturday and won't be getting the bike back for about a month or so. I'll wait until then to totally make my mind up.

I may have grown up around performance/racing motorcycles, but I just can't see giving up handling for apes.

Shortdog,
Your bike looks great. I also have the same bike and in looking at yours I see you have engine guards.  Are they HD parts or did you go after market?  Either way can you give me the details or part numbers as I’m interested in setting up my bike in a similar manner?
Thanks.

Drogers,
I had a problem with reaching the stock bars and started looking for a solution for myself. If you look at the picture you will see that these are only 10" mini-apes. They really look and feel like the old buckhorns without the narrowness. I also like to ride the twisties somewhat aggressively and found that with these new bars my corner speeds have picked up five to 10 mph. It could be a factor of just my increased feeling of comfortability. ( Is that a word?) The way thes particular bars are shaped on the turn down they end up with the same tip width and the grips are actually slightly lower than stock. We lined the upright portion to follow the angle of the triple tree, which eliminates the awkward feeling of full apes. Just my opinion and you have every right to yours. I just don't feel I gave up any performance in my situation.

Mavricktoo,
That is an H-D engine guard. Part # 49200-07
We have one on my wife's '08 Springer also.
It already paid for itself in a skid and fall at a light in Tampa recently. Bruised ego and Scratch on guard, bent mirror and scratch on turn signal housing.
Car stopped at a YELLOW light, I made it she didn"t!
Anyway I will always run an engine guard.

Drogers,
I should have attached this pic before. It gives a better view of these bars compared to stock.

Thanks Shortdog.

I thought that I had seen them in the Harley catalog but never on an actual bike.  I think I like them now that I see them "in person".  I hear you about saving most of the bike in a spill. Glad to hear it worked out with only minor stuff happening and nothing that can't be replaced.
Thanks again.

I installed a set of '06 Wide Glide bars on mine.
no grinding of the clutch master clyinder, I replaced it with the '09 clutch master cylinder.
you have an '09 so the clutch master cylinder is a non issue..

the '06 wide glide bars can found cheap.. I paid $90.00 for mine.
I cut and soldered the harness on mine, it wasn't too hard at all... :2vrolijk_21:
