2003 100th Anni Fatboy
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:57:55 PM »

Hey Everyone,

I have a 2005 SEFB and wouldn't trade it for anything however I am looking to add another . In 2002 my buddy bought a 2003 FB brand spank'n new thinking it was an investment being the anni bike. Is it me or do these bikes not hold any special value. I love the bike and an opportunity came up to buy one with 1000 miles for $13000. Not that I would buy it as an investment ( cuz we all know there's no such thing ) but do you think one day it could hold some extra value?? Or given that I already have a FB consider a different SE. Knowing me I'll go get an 06.

Any comments??  Anyone have an 03 FB??

I think buying a vehicle of any kind hoping for "extra value" is a real gamble. You may have special attachments to a bike/car/truck/boat etc. but when it comes time to sell, that value has to be from the buyer's perspective. If they feel it's valuable then they will pay top dollar.
I ran into this when I has a 1997 EVO Fatboy in the custom color set for that year . It held a good value for several years especially when the Twin Cam first cam out and they had some issues. Many people didn't trust the motor and wanted the reliable EVO motor bikes.
Once the twin cam worked out it's problems, the buyers weren't going to buy an older bike with less power and no warranty for about the same price as a new bike.
Then you can also have the issue of to ride or customize any bike you own. Think of it as if you were buying an old bike and it was mint condition as it came from the factory with almost no miles vs. something that someone else chopped and bobbed and added after market pieces and racked up high mileage...which one would you buy?
I would think to get top dollar you would have to keep the bike in a pristine condition for many years so it became a collectable and the majority of the other bikes in that era were modified or junked. Then you would have a rare thing that would be a find for a collector.
I personally don't have the money to just store vehicles in the hopes that they become valuable collectables in the future. My hats off to those who can. I would buy what I could afford and buy it with the intent to use it and enjoy it as much as possible and not worry about resale value.

When you consider "extra value," keep in mind that Harley did an 18 month production run for '03 bikes (or so I've heard). There are more '03 bikes on the road than other years. Seems to me that pretty much eats up any extra value there may be on any the anniversary model.

There are a lot of black and silver bikes around so I wouldn't add much value to it.  When I bought my 95th Anniversary Fat Boy I did it because I liked the colors.  I believe the blue book value is a few hundred dollars more than a regular model, but as with anything only if somebody wants to pay more.  In the long run (i.e. 50 years or so) maybe it would bring more, but by then they may be asking, "what goes in that tank in front of you?"

I never worry what the bike will be worth in the future as I tend to keep em. I love my (well my daughter's for now) black 03 anny FB. It's amazing when we ride together and stop for gas. The Fatty draws more attention than the other scooters. Great scooter!

I just traded my 03 Heritage and believe me, they don't worth much on the market... (smaller tires, transmission, engine and plenty of them on the market)

You may be right tough, they will worth a lot of money in 2103 for the 200th ann.!!! :P

For 13000$, buy a brand new bike!
