Taking my Import to Canadian Tire for its RIV
« on: March 04, 2010, 08:14:45 AM »

Well the snow has melted enough and the roads are dry enough to put my bike back into service... but first I have to take it to Canadian Tire for its safety inspections (so I can get plates) and its RIV (Registrar of Imported Vehicles) to make sure it meets Canadian Veh Safety standards... now what some clown at Canadian Tire is going to know about a Road Glide is beyond me, but it will be cheaper than taking it to a dealer that is for sure.

Having ridden it back in Nov 775 km from PA to Ottawa, I know the bike is safe, the guy had just put new tires on the bike, and the brakes work really well (Dont ask)

SO I will keep you up to date on the process in case someone else wants to know how hard it is to import a bike in to the Great White North.

When I got my SERG in Nov. 08 I had to get it certified as well so I took it to a small " Mom & Pop " repair shop.  The guy walked around the bike, asked me to use the signals, looked at the brake pads and asked me if it stops alright, then went in and filled out the paper work.  What a joke, it cost me $45.00 for that!

All that the guy at Canadian (Crappy) Tire does is check the VIN for accuracy GVW rating of the bike, Tire & Rim Information and makes sure all of the Compliance Stickers are on the bike are accurate and asks if you want the KPH stickers to put on your MPH Speedo. All of this for your $207.00 DOT Fee.

And then you are off for your Provincial Inspection where they check the Bike for Mechanical Worthiness to be driven on the Provincial Roads. Sometimes you have to be careful as in Manitoba, to get the bike registered as a Harley Davidson the Motor and Transmission number most match the frame VIN or they will classify as a Home Built or Custom. I.E if you changed out to a JIMS 120 or a S&S Motor or changed out the stock tranny to a Baker. Ask me how I know. Sold the original geezerglide Road Glide with a JIMS and a Baker to a guy in Winnipeg, what a hassle to register.

I didn't know they would supply kph stickers for the speedo...not that anyone would want them- I thought the owner would have to change out the mph speedo to kph, and do stuff like add a brake light, in the case of the 2009 SERG...that's what I thought, that's why I figure I'm lucky to have found a used 2009 SERG for a good price right here in Ontario.

I assume they offer the KPH stickers because they have to, however at no time was I advised it is a "requirement" to put them on. I have never changed a speedo from MPH to KPH and I have 3 motorcycles and three vehicles that are in MPH.

About the rear brake light change for 09 SERG for the Canadian Market, I am not aware of having to change from a US style to Canadian, however a friend of mine changed his rear lighting set up on his bought in Canada 09 SERG to the US style. No hassles.

And the bank will let you buy the US Dollar at CDN $1.05 as of a few minutes ago, sure a lot better than CDN $1.38 from years ago,

On the ride to Canadian Tire... got my first speeding ticket in 10 years..Cop liked the bike, reduced the charge... oh well

I asked how fast he said 138... I said no way, I was only doing 85... D ugh!!! damn US speedometer... that is 138 kph...
he laughed, thanked me for not being too irate, and reduced the fine.

Took my 2001 Fltrsei2 to the local CDN tire when I imported it (as per requirements). Guy came out, read the GVW and told me "your paperwork will be ready in 5 minutes". No mechanical check whatsoever!! I asked him about the MPH speedo and he said " I'll make that go away". Nothing easier than that. My guess is the government wanted a national contract, not a bunch of different suppliers. As for CDN Tire-easy money, unfortunatly we have to pay it.

Canadian Tire was not meant to do any mechanical inspections, that is the reason for Out of Province Inspections. Canadian Tire is there to mainly facilitate the paper trail RIV. If you had a car they can do the out of province inspection for it.
