Hey Sponserv, don't know about being the eye of a stingray. I was told that the seat insert was stingray skin and that the white part was a natural part of their skin and it is cut so that the eye is in the same place on all seats. Makes sense to me.

Sting Ray "Eyes"
« Reply #1 on: April 10, 2004, 01:50:55 AM »

I was told by the guy I bought my 2002 SERK from that the white spot on my seat was the eye of the sting ray in the insert. This white spot actually has a different texture and look, etc.

My question is was this guy blowing smoke up my butt? If it is not the eye of the sting ray what is it? It falls right below where my "other little helmet" would ride and I have to explain it to everyone who looks at the bike so  I want to know what the hell the real story on it is. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I got my 2002 SERK I asked many dealers about the Stingray inlay in the seat. I was told this. The white eye of the inlaid seat is actually the cartliage point of where they cut the tail off the stingray. In other words the white eye is the point ( where they cut the tail off the stingray closest to the body of the stingray). The white eye is cartliage. I am a woman owner and have had many a laugh over comments received on what is that on your seat!!!!! I don't have to tell you what my many answers have been.

Laurie,

I would also like to welcome you to the board. Your explanation makes a lot more sense than anything I've been told to date.

I appreciate your help. [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

Hey folks, new to the board, actually found out about it this morning in my American Rider rag.  This is just what I've been looking for.

I have been told that the "eye" is an individual birth mark from each one of the animals. However the tail cut seems to make sense to a certain degree.  I also understand that they are "farm raised" for the skin.  The question I would have on the tail being cut would be "If they cut it off early enough inn the life of the animal how does it swim?"

Anyway my 2 pennies.

Glad to have found you folks! [smiley=beerchug.gif]

O.K guys and girls that explains the white spot that I thought was a wear mark on the front part of the seat. I replaced mine with a leather H-D saddle because the stingray was uncomfortable "down there" when I went on long rides. But why then did the stingray inlay on the passenger part of the saddle turn greenish white ? It really took away from the great look of our bikes (my opinion).
