Open Carry
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:10:16 AM »

I know there was a thread entitled Do you Carry? Now I feel like I came out of the cave to see a lot of discussion on the net regarding Open Carry of a handgun.

Here comes the wild west. So you go to all the trouble of getting your concealed carry and yet it seems the rules are more relaxed for OC.

Anyone tried this successfully in their state? I have to imagine that local law enforcement is not happy, not happy at all...

not sure about other states, but here you can with a permit carry concealed, but not open carry, that is considered "brandishing" and is illegal, they figure if people see a gun they will assume they are in danger and panic

Found this on the web:

http://opencarry.org/maps.html

I would check before doing so.... You just never know how current the law is on postings.

You can find lots of info on the NRA website :
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/#?st=VA

You can also get updates on proposed laws for each state and answers to pro or anti gun emails.

As far as Law Enforcement and open carry. It is almost easier for an officer if he sees a weapon in the open vs. having to guess if a person is armed and needing to pat them down. You can keep an eye on the weapon as well as the hands.
Maybe the state culture has some effect? (Take guns away from citizens because they can't be trusted vs. people need to protect themselves since officers aren't always around or won't get there in time in most cases.) The officer's I knew never feared a law abiding person carrying a gun in a responsible manner. They did want people to accept responsibility for their actions and learn when to shoot and when not to as well as get plenty of range practice to shoot well and to store the weapon properly when not worn.
"Gun free zones" like restaurants, schools, stores etc. just create a large grouping of unarmed victims for mentally disturbed or terrorists. It's like telling the criminal/terrorist..if you want to kill a lot of people and not have much defense to deal with go here etc.

Open carry is technically legal in Ohio, but you don't see it often.

Open carry is legal here in Oregon, but I personally never open carry. I feel that open carry takes away the element of surprise for those who seek to do you harm or commit a crime against you. I am a believer in daily conceal carry.

I think here in In, we have some of the most "laxed" laws as far as "where" you are allowed to have a handgun, but, it must be concealed,w/a concealed carry permit...(which I've maintained for years) Kind'a on the fence w/ open carry.....if it was legal here, then I'd carry open....

I went to the Michigan State Police website and searched "opencarry" low and behold it is legal.
Nice to have options. :rifle:

Yes it is 'legal' to open-carry in NC, KingDog.  But there is a law that makes it illigal if they want to stop you called 'going about in terror of the citizenery' or something to that effect.  I know of what I speak from 1st hand experience......as I too remember when we rode with open carry in the 60's/70's.  ;) har.  spyder
