Asking for input on tuner and auto tune
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:26:46 AM »

I have an '06 SEUC and am going to change out the head pipes for the true duels with Bassani power curve head pipes for the '06 (NO 02 sensors). I am also going to change out the mufflers from my nice blued out (right side only) RUSH mufflers. Another change will be from the SE A/C to a high flow A/C. I have a SERT on the bike now and I'm not to interested in the whole dyno thing seeing that everytime you change out something you will need to get it dynoed again for yet another fee. I am thinking that a tuner is more fitting for me. Just not sure which one to go with. I know there are SEVERAL posts like this and believe me I have read them all looking for that little light to make me lean towards one or the other. I guess I am leaning towards the Dyno Jet Power Commander V. Which brings me to the next question. To AUTO TUNE or not. If I do I will need to buy the bungs ($15.00) and have them added to the new head pipes. It is a $300.00 ish option and I am just wondering if I would really benefit from it.  At this time I do not plan on changing anything else except the mufflers (having a hard time decideing on which ones to get). As for down the road I can honestly say I have no idea on what I might do to the motor.

Any input would be great, and I know this is like beating a horse but I just want to make a good decision.

I have the autotune on my 09 SE (and on my 07 SE) and would not go back.  After the many trips top the Dyno guy, I felt that the extra power and torque that the Dyno gives you was not worth the trouble when you need or want to change something on the bike.  Plus I have had no issues with the bike at 8000 feet, 89 octane gas and 35 degrees to dropping down to the desert at 600 feet and 95 degrees in the same day.  Before the PC V and autotune (had the SERT)many issues with pinging , not liking high altitude, etc.  Since I added it to both bikes, no issues.

I think it was worth it.

Plus, you can easily change things like pipes etc.  If you like power my 07 had D&D 2 into 1.  Great pipes awesome low end torque and no loss at the upper end.  But loud.  Went with Rinehart slip-ons and love them.  Quieted them down with baffle material.

Good luck.

I also have a PCV with autotune on my 07 se ultra and I absolutely love it. It is very user friendly. I would not go back to any other type of tuner. Good Luck!

I just brought my 2010 Spiced Rum into my local shop, Pokerville Ironworks, they're doing the PC V w/ Auto Tuner.  They have a dyno in their shop, and recommended that combo over having the bike dyno'd.  That says a lot to me.

I'm putting V&H true duals with HO Slip Ons on the bike.  No other engine mods.

I have a 2010 CVO Convertable and just installed a ThunderMAx with autotune, along with a set of Rush 1.75 slip-ons. Put about 150 miles on the bike since, and love the results. The bike runs at least 50 deg cooler due to the richer AFRs and lossing the cats from the stock mufflers. Also seems to "feel" better, but in truth, I onle had about 200 miles on the bike before the TMax upgrade. I really believe the addition of the wide band sensors really gives me a better dynamic tune over the various TPS positions.

Only drawback so far is some decel popping, which should be able to be adjusted out after I bring it in for a re-map of the TMax learned off-sets after a few more rides.

Ride Safe....

Have to say that recommendation in and of itself would concern me.  The autotune (and everyone seems to forget this) chases fuel settings only.  The canned basemap's timing settings aren't altered at all.  So if there's anything to be gained there you never get it.  That they don't even point such a thing out as they make the recommendation has to make a guy wonder if they're not sure of their dyno skills, have a really good margin on the device they're recommending or plan a 1-2 punch of selling the device and then recommending a "little dyno tune" also to gain whatever can be had from the timing side.

Granted, a base map an on otherwise unmodified engine might not have much to gain there.  But it's got to at least be part of the conversation (doesn't it?).

IDK, but I've dealt with Will at Pokerville a long time, and he's built some pretty big time bikes with some famous bike builders, so I would think that he know's what he's doing.  I'm sure that if he thought what I was looking for required some time on the Dyno, he would have recommended it.  He's the kind of guy that does it the right way, or doesn't do it at all.  No half ass solutions from this guy.

I think he just listened to what I wanted to do and made suggestions that made sense based on my needs, not the other way around, which is what happens at most of the dealers I've bought bikes from.  I'm not looking for anything fancy at this point, just a better sound, a littler better performance and that's it.

That's the kind of relationship, trust and insight that develops over time. That level of trust and comfort with a shop is too rarely earned.  Good luck on excellent results.

So if I understand this correctly since I already have the PC V installed on my 010 sesg
that I could add the auto tuner option, connect the co2 sensors to my V&H duals and this would fine tune my bike? no laptops, maps or any of that?  right now I get decel popping I want to get rid of ? also going to change my fillsac baffles from 2 1/4 to 1 3/4 to quiet down the sound ?.   thanks  Cr

I have PCV with autotune and it works great. A good base map or... better yet a dyno tune to get the best start for the autotune. I have been told the autotune will "learn" and adjust best after that. If the bike runs good and only pops back a bit try the auto tune as is. It may solve the issue. http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander/Products/AutoTune/powercommander_autotune.aspx  :drink:
