Are all DOT 5 fluids created equal?
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:06:54 AM »

After reading some posts regarding handling and bleeding brake systems with DOT 5 fluids I thought I would ask if all DOT 5 fluids are the same.

I am going to rebuilt my rear master cylinder and am going to install new DOT 5.

I had rear brake work done (replaced brake pads, rebuilt caliper, replace brake line) at the dealer and I didn't specify to have them rebuild the rear master cylinder (with all that brake work and the year of the bike you would think a rebuld would be part of the process).

BTW, I have the rebuild kit part number of 42382-87C, other than a new bleeder screw (44048-83) any other parts I may need? gasket or sight glass?

Thanks!

All DOT 5 fluids will have the issues you read about.  All require very careful handling.  All will entrain air suspended within the fluid if agitated even mildly.  All, if this happens, are impossible to bleed until the liquid simply sets long enough to lose the air.  And all DOT5 can not be used on an ABS equipped vehicle.  Aside from those nuisances it's good stuff...

Your a wealth of knowledge!

Whole assembly is about twice the rebuild kit and includes the push rod and rebuild kit...worth the extra $$$.

Thanks!

Yes they are, but take care to check that you don't buy 'DOT5.1'. Despite having a similar number it is not compatible with 'DOT5'. Someone in DOT needs flogging for creating two specs which are so different!

Entrainment of air in concrete is good, entrainment of air in brake fluid is not good.  That pretty much covers entrainment for me.

My Body seems to entrain a lot of air, but eventually it all comes out one end or the other  :nixweiss:
