06 CVO Ultra build
« on: March 10, 2010, 09:47:36 PM »

I have an 06 Ultraclassic with the stock over cammed 103 engine and the crap heads. I would like to bump the compression ratio to somewhere around 9.5. Has anybody had any luck with having the stock 103 heads flowed, or should I go with a pair of 96 cubic inch heads with the smaller combustion chamber and have them worked. I am upgrading to the 54G gear drive cams and they can handle 10:1 compression. I know that this is old technology, but I didn't like the 110 cu. with all of its inherent problems, so I bought an 06 with 1600 miles on it. I know that the heads can be welded to make the combustion chambers smaller in size, but I don't want to sink a fortune in this build. After all, the bike is a heavy bagger and I need torque more than HP. I would like to hear other peoples experiences with this setup. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Update: I went with the Andrews 54N cams and the tensioner upgrade. I also did the Fueling oilpump, and lifters. The 54N really gave me useful power from the 2000-5000 RPM range. Did a custom map and dyno run today, 95 HP and 104ftlbs of Torque. I would have went gear drive but my endplay was a bit out. FYI

Any help would be appreciated!             Kendall Johnson did a set of stock 103 Heads for my friend with a 03 SERK he is running Kuryakyn 625 Gear Drive Cams Dual 50MM Throttle Body Daytona Twin Tech Computer Rhinehart Duals and some other goodies and it is BAAAD ASSS and on another note he also has a 05 SEEG with Kuryakyn Wild Things Heads-Throttle Body same 625 Gear Drive Cams-SERT Rhinehart Duals and other things also it also runs good and gets 40 MPG! The 03 is real real strong on take off and bottom end the 05 cant touch it in that area but in the mid and upper range the 05 is real strong these are two different setup and they both run great with good milage and you can ride them cross country with no problems at all maybe this will help you with your decision

Put a Yuill Bros YB-13 or Zippers 575 cam in it. Combined with a good exhaust, AC, and tune will get you 105-115hp and the same in torque. The 103's run great with these two cams and stock heads without the expense of pulling the motor apart.

Check out this thread for a bunch of dyno's on the 103" SEEG's

The heads are good and with milling they come down to ~90cc easily without any pain. The ports are take-offs from the SE MCR heads and have a proven history of working well especially with the lack of valve to chamber schrouding and a little head work.

Did you change your crankshaft out? The S&S 106" kit uses a 4.5" stroke crank with 3 7/8" bore (same as the 95" or 103") pistons. The 06 cvo had a 4 3/8" stroke crankshaft.

Makes sense....must have used this one:

Listed for 07+ bikes but no reason why not to on a bike with a 4 3/8" crank...

I meant the bigger bore. They are a lot thicker than the stock cylinders and worked great.Got me up to around 9.5 compression.I have compression but don't need them unless it is real hot out.

Wood 6, and work the heads over.
120 ft/lbs, right where you want it. :)

You will not find a better torquer, we used to call them RV cams for pickups, than the Woods TW5. I would change to the Woods TW5-6R and convert to the new roller chain with 07 upgraded oil pump, hydraulic tensioners and the old troublesome spring loaded tensioners go away. Remember the heads have ports just like the old SE MCR heads and an open chamber that enhances breathing due to less chamber to valve shrouding. Ask Bobby Wood and he will tell you the TW5 was designed as a compatible cam for use with the SE MCR head. Only headwork needed is minor and a milling or a low dome piston.
Forget about the 96" heads or welding yours, a waste of money, not needed, plus you keep the SE logo on your heads.
Kiss principal and some new OEM 07 parts, Done

Don,

I'm going to be doing the conversion tensioner/pump, cam upgrade with the TW-5-6 on my '06 CVO 103, per your rec.  :2vrolijk_21: I have a pair of the SE MCR heads P/N 16953-08, should i bolt those and keep my flat tops? instead of you working the CVO heads? The MCR heads state they yield 76cc??? and the CVO head is 98cc??

Those are good heads but they typically are 78-79cc but now you have a ping machine at ~10.7/1 CR, overkill on compression even if the cam duration is increased.

Lower cc, yields a higher comp, and torque? Trade off.. Detonation even with the TW-5-6
