CVO SE GPS SYSTEM
« on: March 12, 2010, 11:29:57 PM »

I know there is a rather long thread on this but I cannot find the answer to a question. Can you operate the music system including CD player while using the nav unit or must the nav discs be installed when using the gps and effectively eliminating the music functions? Please tell me that inserting the nav disc are only to map a route and then they are removed so the rest of the unit is functional. THANKS.

I'm sorry, but you HAVE to have the Navigation disc in the unit, to operate the Navigation system.  :(

The nav system is at best terrible in the built in unit.  Could be why HD sells so many Zumo's and even has custom monuts.

No, you DO NOT have to have the disc in ALL the time. You can insert the disk, plan your route then remove it. But (& this is a big but) if you deviate from the route at all, you'll have to put the disc back in.

Bungy hit it on the head.  You can, but I wouldn't.  I use XM all the time so it's not a problem anyway.

I was stubborn for a while and didn't want to add another GPS when I already had one, but it was just too much of a pain to switch CD's to setup a route.  I finally broke down and bought the Garmin 550.  Now that I have checked out my friend's 660, I wish I would have gone that route instead, but I suppose the 550 is satisfactory.  My final breaking point was when the gal on the back let me know what time she needed to be home and we were lost at the time.  I had to stop and get out the disk and program it to take me home.  I realized that if I had a Garmin, I could have done this while continuing to ride and not missing a beat in the music.  I didn't spend this much on a bike to be inconvenienced by it.

In two words: worthless garbage.

We paid about $1000 for it I suppose.

The price built in for it was definitely too high, but it certainly isn't worthless garbage.  It actually does a great job for it's intended purpose...getting from point A to point B.  Once the CD is in, it is very easy to program and it works quite well.  It's the inconvenience factor that makes it so overpriced.  It did take a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to use it, but once you know how to do everything, it is quite simple and does a very good job.  Obviously, I wouldn't give up my Garmin for it though.

I know that's the theory, Bungy - and sometimes (but hardly ever!) it works. Maybe it's because our European maps are different, but several times I've been say 100 miles away from home, stuck in the CD and calculated the route.  When it says you can start, change the CD for a music one, set off on the route, and not deviate, when it starts saying please insert the CD again; even though the road is exactly the one, unchanged, it's directed you down.  What also doesn't help of course is the maps are years out of date, and the MoCo have made no updates available - even if it did reliably work as you say (and yes, occasionally I've seen it do that!) as soon as you come to a changed bit of road, it hasn't a clue.

You have to ask - how hard would it have been to stick an SD Card reader on the thing to load the maps from, without you having to keep swapping CDs...  :nixweiss:

Worthless piece of garbage WAS correct. The Zumo 550 is a thousand times better than the MOCO GPS. I have tried the MOCO unit a couple of times, and it will try to take you down roads that a two year old would know not to go on. From my home to work it will try to take me miles out of the way and also down dirt roads.  The Zumo can also miss-lead you alot of the times, but it is light years better. Plus you have blue tooth capability, mp3, and you do not need any discs that you have to install.

I had a situation last summer, my Garmin 550 malfunctioned due to water getting into the connector from the XM antenna. Wife and I were out in the middle of nowhere and since I had the nav cd's with me, what the hell, I gave it a shot. It actually did a good job of getting us back to the New London / Orient Point ferry. So as a back up it has some value. I did fix the Garmin ASAP.

In fairness, my Zumo 550 has twice taken me down unsurfaced dirt tracks - that's the map data that's at fault, not the GPS.  And I'd even be happy with the MoCo one instead of the Zumo if 1) you could plan a route, with stops/waypoints instead of just point-to-point, and 2) if you didn't have to keep sticking the darn CD in, as discussed.  It actually integrates very well with the audio system and controls - the feature where one prod on the left hand control tells you ETA etc is great.
