Hey guys,

I have a '09 Ultra with a 103(103hp/113tq) in it that this winter I am going to be splitting the cases to weld/true/balance the crank. I am considering going on ahead with a 110" motor while it is apart but what concerns me is the mileage per tank. I take this bike on alot of road trips where I really want/need 150-180 miles per tank. I already have andrews 54's in it and do not know for certain if I would stay with them or go to a woods 408 or something along those lines. I really want to try to keep the compression down due to fuel quality issues  and availability while on the road. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Just bolting stock heads on a big bore kit for an 09 103" puts you right at 10/1 and with that can this is reasonable. As the cubes move up so does the swept volume and the compression does too. Now with the 110 and factory stock HD pistons you are at 10.6/1 and 204psi cranking compression. Sounds like pinging to me. Would be wise to open the chamber (a little wider) to gain a few CCs, plus there are some other advantages.

If going that route I would go 113" and port the heads. Best bang for the buck plus looks stealth. Have done several of the Pro Street heads for similar builds and they rip. 125 square SAE and torque lit by the low 2k range. We now have the 1.98" 7mm intake valves in stock so those will be used with builds such as this along with beehive springs.

Cruise mileage will be 40+ mpg and similar to the stock motor tuned properly. Get on it a lot and that mileage goes by by

Dewey I agree on the 113 aspect. I just had a 113 built for my fatbob and it runs like a champ. I am running 10.6:1 on it and that is higher than I would want on a touring bike. I will be doing this after I return from Sturgis. If I can find an extra set of heads I'll go ahead and get an extra set and try to go you guys to make me a set up to have ready prior to the teardown.

That's the real answer to the question posed by the title of this thread.  It all depends on how much and how often you twist the right wrist.  Steady cruise with a good tune should be good for approximately 40 mpg at normal highway speeds, running hard might drop that to the low to mid 30's.  If you assume 40 mpg, that's 240 miles with a 6 gallon tank.  Assume 32 mpg and the range drops to 192 miles.  Still more than meets your requirement for 150-180 range (assuming you get that 6 gallon tank completely filled, which isn't all that easy).

BTW, IMHO you would be better served to go straight to the 113 and forget the Harley 110 kit.  If you decide to do the 110, at least use aftermarket cylinders rather than the marginal ones from H-D.

I don't care about what the MPG costs me to ride it but I want to keep some sort of practicality in mind when building a touring bike. I have a 113 in my fat bob. On that bike I don't care if I have to stop ever 100-120 miles for fuel but I just don't want to have to be worrying while out west about fuel every time I turn around. Heck if these things had 10 gallon tanks then I wouldn't care at all. lol

Thanks. I am a little surprised about how good your mpg is. On my fatbob(with the break in map getting it tuned this weekend) I am only averaging about 33 mpg and that's why I was concerned about the additional weight/size of a bagger.

Mid 30's cause I can only afford 107/108 not 120/120.

no problem. I am just starting to really look in to what I am going to do to the Ultra. I have about six months until I start tearing it apart so I have lots of time to figure out what to do. My main concern is an aftermarket throttle body but I think I read somewhere that HPI is coming out with a FBW throttle body. I am going to be down at the tuners this weekend and we will discuss different cam/head/ tb options.
