Anyone remove the balancers on a "B" motor???
« on: March 20, 2010, 06:56:13 PM »

Hey everyone,

I dropped my CVO springer off today for an engine build. He is going to split the cases and true/weld/balance the crank among other things. Today the builder asked me if I wanted him to remove the balancers from the bottom end. I asked him why would I want to do that and he said for one thing it will free up some additional hp and allow the motor to rev quicker but the balancer needs to be rebuilt at approx every 40k miles(which involves splitting the cases again). He said that it will make the engine vibrate a little more going down the road but he has done it several times. Any opinions on this? I am going to be using the bike for mainly shorter rides around town(less than 100 miles at a time) but I am wanting something low maintenance and I don't know how bad the engine vibes would be through the handlebars? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think you would be nuts. That b-motor has solid mounts to the frame. Unlike a touring bike which has rubber mounts for its A-engine. A b-motor without the balancers might be just fine with rubber engine mounts but that B-motor with solid mounts is definitely going to make you very close with your dentist....to replace th fillings your bike is going to shake out of your head.

MY VOTE: Don't do it!! A friend of mine bult a real nice Deuce and decided to remove them for all of your stated reasons. In the end, the motor vibrated and buzzed so much he was back into it and put them back.

ALSO FWIW The horsepower is increase is about 5 hp at max rpms.

in my mind the whole point of a twin cam is handle bars that you can actually hold your hands on when going over 60....

if you take out the balancers you have a 110" shovel - the next thing you will do is put on a real small rear sprocket so that your hands dont go numb at 70

and forget cruising at 80 plus... it WILL go fast - but you wont want to for very long.. my old shovels would shake off turn signals and other parts if i tried going over 60 for any amount of time.

if you want a shaker that can run 80 without hurting your hands you need less stroke.. and a real wide transmission ratio, deep first gear, with a large trans sprocket and a small rear sprocket..

Have many that have had that done, and there is a distinct "buzz" to the bike afterwards.
BTW, some of our top producer's have been "B" engines, with the balancer's in place. :)
