My wife and I did this last year also, great trip. Took the ferry across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee than up and around the UP. Link below is for Lake Express Ferry and they have a promotion going on for May and June that motorcycles go free.

pm me also if you would like more info.

I've done the circle trip a number of times, but only coming from Ontario.  We've always enjoyed a couple of nights in Frankemuth (just above Flint) and you should definitely plan on a few nights in Mackinaw City.  I would stay on the mainland where there are plenty of hotels to choose from (personally I like the Best Western-Waterfront) and plan for a full day to tour around Mackinac Island by horse & buggy, stopping at the Grand Hotel for "high tea" of course!

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

We were actually thinking about going North from the Lake Geneva area, follow the Kettle Moraine Scenic Route up to Elkhart, then straight to Greenbay. Then follow a closer to the Lake Path than the actual Circle Route on both sides of the pond.  We were planning on hitting the ferry in Muskegan for the route back to Milwaukee.

I'm just wondering however if getting off the main state routes is such a great idea?

I've attached the GDB for Mapsource for those who can open this.

I couldn't open your link, but I have done this trip a few times.  It is a great trip.  If you end up staying at Elkhart Lake for a night, let me know as I can recommend places to stay, restaurants and such.  I have probably been to Elkhart Lake over 100 times over the years.  The ferry ride is great.  No problem getting off the main state routes.  Actually very scenic if you avoid the main routes as much as possible.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the offer - Seeing Elkhart is only 150 miles into the 900 mile round trip, we'll probably hold out further to perhaps somewhere between Pensaukee and Escanaba.

this trip must be the thing to do.

Four of us are going do this out of Chicago the week of 6-19 to 6-26. We will be on Trikes. Running from Chicago up to Door Country, stay overnite, than up to Mackinam City and stay overnite, go to the island, than run into Canada, stay some place that nite, run to the falls and stay overnite, than stay on the Canada side back down to MI, than run across MI to get the ferry and back across the lake and than back to Chicago.

I don't have the complet route in my head yet once we cross into Canada, one of the others is ploting the route.

And anyone who is going to do this, any run around Chicago will be a mess this year, they are going to start on the expressways on 4-1 untill 11-1. The Dan Rayn from the East into Chicago will be O.K. as that was done last two years, but from down town out west or up north will be bad.

That is why we are gong to run across MI to the ferry and back to WI and than down to home.
