I carry a little 1 litre (quart?) screw top fuel container that I got from a camping shop - just gives me the confidence to keep going when I might otherwise be stopping.

Cheers

Dog,
I think most are envious of your upcoming adventure. Don't bother with the radar detector, your more likely to get written up with that, then if you didn't have it.
Like Don said lose the stock seat or you'll be way sorry.
And the Garmin units 2620 and up are very good to have IMO.
Have lots of fun, take lots of pics.

I would advise a helmet cam for the memories!

I really appreciate you posting this.  I've not done an actual sanctioned iron butt ride but I've done more than a few of my own in my days of riding.........several 1,000 mile in a day before.  I appreciate this link, a bunch!  Starting to get up there in age a little and I need all the tips I can get now. [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  I used to just mad dog it but now I need to put a little thought and planning into the long hauls.

I am taking a trip from Dallas via CO, and Yellowstone to Sturgis Sept. 28 - Aug 7 and suggest maping out all of your gas stops along the way using a trip planner or GPS so you don't get stuck (and also saves on the number of times you will need to stop.

I just got the new HD Enthusiast Magazine and it has an article on the basic items you need to take on a long trip.  I personally think the best thing to have on a long trip is a cell phone!
