question about cam again
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:23:34 AM »

i am stating to feel dumb for asking these q's but i guess i just have never had a twin cam. i have a 01 road king efi.  ok i orderd a tc26a chain drove andrews cam kit. comes with all orings/ adj pushrods/ pushrod covers. now i got a new q. i know it is my cam / cam chain that is ticking in my bike. i was looking at one of thos newer style cam chain upgrade. http://www.stpaulharley.com/Cam-Chain-Tensioner-Plate-Upgrade-Kit-25284-08-p/25284-08.htm it says that i use orginal chain and sprokets for front and back. should i not replace the chains? if so where do i get them from been looking for them and only can find them though harley themselfs. thanks for your guys help and hope you guys can figure this out for me. i "think" that andrews makes a sprocket that will allow you to use a new chain on the front side....

i could be wrong - but i think if you get the hd kit and the andrews big sprocket...

is there anybody with those parts in there hand who could tell if it would work?

also search the site - there is a way to buff the old chains to make them smoother - cleaning is the hard part.

the kit comes with a new style front chain and new style front sprockets - but the large sprocket does not have the cam position trigger cast on it, so the installation instructions for the very early engines say to just throw the two new sprockets and chain away and use the old ones.

the older engines still had a cam position sensor in the cam cover - on bikes since then the cam cover is completely pointless - nothing in it

the andrews kit that does the same thing but uses special cams has a new style chain sprocket WITH the cam position trigger cast on it. the andrews kits costs more due to new special cams.

so the REAL question is this - can the andrews sprocket with the cam position trigger cast on it be used with the hd kit? "will the andrews sprocket fit the old cams?" if so its obvious that the new chains wear better so it really should pay.. the andrews part number is 216015 - if somebody has the part in hand we will all know.. note that even with the andrews 07 chain kit - this sprocket is a add on to the order and is specifically for the early years.
