Fuel Gauge/Fuel Remaining Range
« on: April 08, 2010, 09:07:15 PM »

My gas guage always reads about 1/8 tank below actual but my fuel remaining seems accurate.  I wonder about others experience with this.

Most gas I've ever been able to put in 5.35 gallons when fuel remaining dropped below 10 miles and read "Low" - Gauge at zero well before this.
Fuel Remaining 259 miles on full tank - I'm curious what others get after fill up?

Please let me know your experience with this.

Mine sounds exactly like what yours does.  The needle rides the empty peg for a while then the light comes on and it usually says I have 35 miles left.  I let it get below 10 once and it said low.  Most gas I've put in is about 5.35 gal and that was with the bike leaning.  Not sure if I could stand it up and get more in it or not.  I've been getting about 200 miles on about 5.1-5.2 gal.

Same with SEUC.  Unless I'm crusing blue highways and not in a hurry.  Then the guage is the same, but my mileage increases to 44mpg.  Garmin says EMPTY and fuel guage showes 1/4  :)

My Mile to Empty seems more accurate than the gauge. Gauge says below E but still shows 35-50 miles remaining. Had the gauge replaced and that didn't fix it. Figured the gauge was easiest, now I am not going to worry about it.

Consider yourselves lucky that the gauge is pessimistic; it hasn't always been that way.  Mine, and many others on the old 5 gallon tanks, tended to read between 1/8 and 1/4 as the engine started missing and then quit due to lack of fuel.

Harley doesn't seem to have the ability to come up with an accurate fuel gauge, and if you can't have accurate then at least it's better to have it read lower than actual.  I think it has something to do with being CHEAP, since the entire gauge package on an E'glide is equally inaccurate.  I guess $5 just doesn't buy as much these days as it used to; maybe the MoCo should increase the budget to $10 for their gauges. :nixweiss:

Seems to be consistant within a couple on tenths, I've verified this by filling up at the marks. But then maybe I just got lucky with the gas gauge.

6 gal tank
empty = 5 gals used 1 to fillup( fuel light on switches to read -> miles left)
1/4 = 4 gals used (2 to fillup)
1/2 = 3 gals used (3 to fillup)
3/4 = 2 gals used (4 to fillup)
Full = 6 gals

I don't have enough faith to trust the guage. When low fuel light comes on I stop. Haven't been stranded yet. :)

First time Guage hits empty fillup 4 gals

Next time Guage hits empty says 45 miles to empty keep riding until it reads 0 miles to empty fillup 5.3 gals

glad to have it off in the direction not requiring a gas can have ridden past 0 miles multiple time but always when I know I am approaching a station quickly.

My tank takes 4 gals with the gauge on empty also...but the miles to empty still reads 80. I haven't had the courage to ride until it reads 0 yet.

@Jerry:

let's be fair. No motorcycle manufacturer has "correct" gas gauges to offer. The tank is too small, there is too much built in and the liquid is in constant move.

The "miles to empty" gimmick with my H-D is about as "correct" as it is with my Mercedes: always on the safe side, around 20-30 m left when it say "empty". But the numbers drop disproportionally between "60 m left" and "empty" (as they do with the Merc  ;))

So that's ok with me - I don't have to readapt  ;D

I have.  After 0 miles till empty, I still had to ride about another four or five miles.  Never did run out but I put 6.23 in it.  Typical for HD gauges.....not accurate at all.  The fuel gauge has always been the worse of all the gauges. :nixweiss:
