Under ground fence for pets help question
« on: April 09, 2010, 11:05:08 AM »

Well I have two Boxer dogs that have learned that if they run fast over the buried wire they can easily make it. I have tried two systems so far one from Cables and one from Wallmart. Neither seem to be very good. They use small battery's similar to that in a watch or key fob. Any one know of something that is more powerfull. Thanks for any ideas.

Don't know if you have checked with this company, there are several large dogs in my neighborhood that use this wireless fence.

I have heard that some big dogs just power through, take the shot of pain then shake it off and free to run. A friend of mine told me this as he watched his Rot do this from his window. :o

Yes, dogs will run thru the "invisible fence" and normally not come back thru on their own.  Each dog is different.  With the purchase of an "invisible fence" install, a person will come out several times to work with you and your dog.

We have about 2 acres with the "invisible fence brand" and our goldendoodle hasn't used the collar since she was about 6 months old.  She "knows" exactly what her boundaries are in the 2 acres  covered and will chase a cat to the limit and then stop.  We are just lucky to have a dog as smart as she is.

Invisible fence has worked great with our German Shorthair.
You can vary the field (how close the dog comes
to the wire before a warning signal is illicited) and
the strength of the correction given

Might strengthen (widen) the field if you have the option.  Might want to check how tight the collars are, and some collars have different lenght prong contacts( short hair you wouldnt need the long ones, but if you do have longer ones you could try that).  Set the zone flags back up and do some remedial training with them again.  Good luck!

If it has happened already it may be beneficial to work with the dogs at the perimeter to ingrain the need to be wary at the wire  :nixweiss:

We have an Innotech in ground fence. The Boxer stays inside the barrier but the 13 year old English Setter will always cross the fence. So it depends on the dogs attitude some just don't don't care if they get shocked.

I have used the invisible fence with Doberman's and harnessed them with the collar on and after a few times of being shocked they learned when they heard a beep to back off.  After a month or so I could put the collar on them with no battery and it had the same effect as if it was energized the dogs would not go near the area. You have to work with the dogs and let them get the audible notice and then shocked, they will learn in most cases.

I did have a big male that watched me bury the wire and before I got the unit hooked up he dug the wire out, kind of comical like he was telling me on hell no, I'm not going to let you do that to me.

Good Luck

I had the invisible fence with two dogs one large and a small one and we never had any problems as long as you train your dog, and if they run get the collars turned up, after they learn where the fence is and the zap that goes with it they won't cross it
a buddy of mine after a couple of pops though he would walk through it he said he would never do it again    :huepfenjump3:

I second this before you spend more money.

I have always had  German Shorthair Pointers and I had a big male that was pretty stubborn and not sensitive to pain.
once he learned the consequence of the jail break, my life became pretty miserable.
I was more determined to stop him so I took both (invisible fence) collars and snapped them together and put them on his hind quarter.
one was positioned around his scrotum.
It did not take long before I heard this ungodly noise and found him in the middle of the yard (inside the fence) licking himself.
After that he never broke through again.

1st: if a dog once learned to break trough any "magic fence" he will allways. Just stronger impulse will not help as he will get used to it too. You have to think up something completely different.

2nd: some dogs just don't get impessed whatever you use on them. I once had a Basset, nothing at all did any visible impression on him, no electro-shock, no slingshot, not even pepper, plainly nothing. As he had excellent eagernesss to work the scent and a very friendly character, we just lived with it. But never cut him loose - away he was for hours or even days  ???

Just my 2 cent  ;)

Anyone ever been shocked with one of these collars.  I was messing around with one one day and walked into the line of fire while talking to my wife with the unit in my hand.  I have to tell you it would stop me from running, chasing or anything else, darn near shocked the piss out of me.  That is when I decided to re try on the dogs with no battery, I learned the collar on them is what scared them enough not to go near the line.

A problem with those underground fences is that some dogs will get excited and run straight though it and get shocked. The shock won't necessarily scare them but it could keep them from coming back inside the fence. Remember those fences aren't directional, they get you coming and going.
