Securing your investment
« on: February 04, 2006, 01:07:02 PM »

Maybe I am being a little too concerned, causious, but what do some of you do to secure your bike? We plan on being on the road alot again this year and I am a little worried about this. In the past I would lock the bikes at rotors, steering etc, but that was a '98 Softail Springer or '99 EG Ultra, I could replace these if stolen, but not a CUSE! Lojack now offers motorcycle units, any experience? We often ride alone so locking to other bikes is not often available. Just looking for some ideas.  Wrongway

Well, I disk lock both wheels, lock the fork, set the alarm, turn on the alarm pager and load the 9mm Glock. That pretty well takes care of it.   ;D

If the thief can get past all that, I just call my insurance agent and the boys in blue.

Sometimes you cant do enough, if they want it they WILL get it. If they dont take the bike they will take the parts they want, bags-tour pack-even fairings etc..  The best thing is to always park it where it can be seen by you or someone you trust. A 9mm is a good thing too.

I think on parking where you can see the bike is the best idea, but I have not rode out west in a few years.
When I am traveling long distance I try to stay in places that allow me window or ground level eye contact with my bike.

Good Luck and Ride Safe

Hi Wrongway,
All of the above advice is good. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
To answer your question about Lojack it does have drawbacks in that it is not a nationwide locator system like Onstar for cars and trucks. If everywhere you usally ride is covered by the Lojack then fine but if you do lots of traveling or the coverage area is small in your area and your bike can quickly be transported out of range the system is not doing you any good. You also have to depend on the local police department having a working Lojack reciever car on the street and it is manned by a trained officer in order to track down your bike. Many police departments are getting away from Lojack since Onstar is becoming more popular and you don't need specialy equiped cars or trained officers.
You may want to check the Viper Alarm website ,they have a GPS based locator system for cars and maybe with some modification that system could be installed on a bike?
With the Viper system if the alarm is triggered it sends a message to your cell phone or home computer so you have unlimited range compaired to a regular alarm pager. You can also disable the vehicle yourself as well as track it's movement yourself.
I hope this helps you some.

Ok. So now they drive off with a stolen featherlite trailer. Then to their surprise they also get a few awesome bikes as a bonus! ;D

I park mine rite infront of my door or in front of the lobby where it can be seen from someone at the desk. 5 bucks to the person on duty goes along way. I've went up and check in on them. I've also done the Radio Shack motion detector, its really touchy, tuck it under the tour pack back rest.

best thing i bought is a $25 generic cover, it packs up small and any would be thief has to think before they go lookin under there, they have no idea what kind of bike it is, and no idea what kind of security is on. I use that and the factory security system. oh yea if you can find a cheap cover that says Honda all the better.

Hubbard, Your the best! If I had your trailer that would be an option, but I only have the license to drive it, not own it. One of these days I'm gonna ride right next to ya, and I can't wait!  Wrongway

I honestly don't ride a lot just around town.  So a good chunk of the miles the bike gets are on road trips and tend to see it parked quite a few nights at motels that way.  I generally look for the side-of-the-road type one or two story old motels that look like they've been there since the 50s or 60s.  They're often cheap and I just like the character of the places too.  A good benefit is there is usually little problem getting a ground floor room with a big window you can park right in front of.

If things look anything other than normal I'll roll the bike up on the sidewalk, under the canopy that is usually there, and park in right in front of the window.  Being the close to the room I'd guess most would-be problem children would be even more concerned about the noise and catching the attention of someone inside the room.

If for whatever reason the parking lot seems to make me actually concerned; screw it.  Most motels have wide doors.  Just roll the bastard inside.  That nasty old raggedy carpet has seen far worse than my two tires are ever going to do to it.  I haven't done this very often over the years.  But there's been probably half a dozen times that my bike has slept inside.

Not a bad thought. Will a Road Glide fit through a standard door?
