For that expense and effort might be worth waiting until the 2012 EPA regs kick in and see if the 2013 models see the 110th Anniversary models finally bring in water cooling.  Then just get a Road Glide.

But then you will have to wait another 2 years(at least) until the facotry works out all the bugs with the new water cooling setup.

They'll never work out the bugs...just leave them for us to figure out!

But then you will have to wait another 2 years(at least) until the facotry works out all the bugs with the new water cooling setup.

For whatever reason it seems HD is actually (and finally) making strides to catch up (some) on management and control systems.  TBW, the new HDLAN system, ABS across more of the fleet and who knows what will come from next.  All these systems will start in one family and propagate across the fleet.

Sounds like a good thing.  A long reach toward modernity from a company that thinks its first attempt at engine monitoring in the 21st century using o2 sensors that automotive mftrs had phased out by 1990 or so deserved acclaim.

From most companies it might be a good thing.  With Harley it will be a necessary evil.  Because they've proved they can almost never get new roll outs done right or easily or seamlessly.

So for the next ten years as they continue this effort to catch up, so they can meet current and future mandates, I honestly don't expect there will be a time when some part of the fleet and some cadre of owners won't be experiencing the "next" two year cycle of "getting the bugs out" of something.

I hope I'm wrong.  But I'm not optimistic about the broad sweep of the ownership experience for the next decade.  Expect it be merely a continuation of the decline in overall QC, the hassles as they evade responsibility and the difficulties concomitant to their trying to catch up that we've already seen begin over the last half decade.

They've learned how to get away with cutting corners.  They've built that in to their culture and seemingly accepted it as their ethos.  God help them (because owners finally won't) when that eventually bites them in the ass.

I hear what you're saying, 2Ln, but they've had the twin since ot-3 and it's still leaks oil, runs hot and doesn't produce the power it should.  You really think that in 2 years they can produce a decent water buffalo??????

My '02 SERK never leaked. My '10 SESG doesn't leak. Blame the EPA, not the MOCO for lean bikes, with CATs that run hot. That's why we all dyno tune our bikes, remove the CATs, etc. As for power, no doubt the 110 is the engine that should be the base engine for the full line, but that's more economics than engineering.

Anyone who buys an air cooled, push rod, 2-valve V-Twin knows they're not getting a Hayabusa, right?

Other brands out there have not had any oil leaks and run MUCH cooler with their air cooled V twins when they were producing them years ago.  Those other brands have since moved on to better technology.  You're right, I expect it to run hot and only have 60hp to the rear wheel for $37 large.  Especially since they've been producing essentially the same damn motor for over 100 years.  yep. :o

No I'm not expecting a 'busa, but there's been enough people on this site who've properly rebuilt their bikes.  They've then ridden the chit out of them and not had any failures.  They now run cooler, produce more power AND get better fuel mileage.  Seems to me that would be better for the environment- using less fuel.  Am I missing something???? :confused5:

I'm not looking to pick a fight, but come on...
What V (or vertical) twins are you remembering? Surely not Indians. And the problems with Vincents, Triumphs, BSAs, Nortons, etc are the stuff of legends. There are guys on this forum who have spent a fortune having their motors rebuilt. And hand-built hot rods will always out perform a factory production motor. Sadly, they're not EPA legal. If if the MOCO could build similar motors at a reasonable price, they would not be legal.

HD motors are a compromise between heritage, style and function. To think that a push rod, two-valve, air-cooled V-Twin can compete with more contemporary designs is wishful thinking. The options are out there. If I wanted a Gold Wing, I'd have one. To each his own, right?

I did not see it posted, but the 2011's can be ordered with stock 96 engine, 103 engine or 110 engine from the factory.

of course that is for the reg kine of bikes.

it would be an interesting order to place for a CVO bike to have a 103.

I wonder if they could/would do that?

I thought I had read where you would be able to choose which color engine you wanted. It would make sense that it is not necessarily the color as the size.

Select Touring models gain power and technology with the new Harley-Davidson PowerPak, which bundles the Twin Cam 103™ engine with ABS (anti-lock braking system) and the H-D® Smart Security System. PowerPak is a standard feature on the 2011 Road King® Classic, Electra Glide® Ultra Limited, and Road Glide® Ultra models, and will be available as a factory-installed option on the 2011 Street Glide® and Road Glide® Custom models.

This sounded interesting. Seems now you can order the bike with a different engine finish. ???
