Left in the wind by an '08 Se Springer
« on: April 21, 2010, 12:44:00 PM »

I have an '06 SEUC and finally got the chance to ride with a Member as well as a close friend on mine last night.  He recently purchased an '08 SE Springer and had a few things done to it but nothing with the motor. We rode to our club meeting and afterwards headed to a different watering hole and well with my newly dynoed ride I thought we could hot dog a little bit at the lights and straight aways and well I found that he kicked my A$$ bad.  I laughted knowing I had over 100 lbs. on him in body weight let alone the differences in the weight of the bikes. But WOW is that bike fast. He got rubber in second gear and well going into third was all grip. I am very inpressed with the style and now the HP of that bike.

I know I would never look right on it (Grape Ape comes to mind) but if you are of average size this is one heck of a bike if you can live without the radio and other extras the UC, RG and SG have.

Thanks to my buddy Gil for handing it to me, it sure was alot of fun.

I hope you don't have "speed envy," Topper.  As we all know, weight (rider & bike), torque, hp, gearing, clutch, and rider skill (and willingness to abuse the machine) all go into zero to whatever times.  It also seems that no matter how fast your ride is, you'll find someone faster.  If you were a dragger, you would not have a SEUC!

I recall soon after picking up my 04 RG with what was a pretty fast, 103" crate motor, another 04 RG pulls up next to me with a Jims, 120" motor.  I guess if I wanted to be the fastest bike around, I'd have gotten a Hayabusa with nitrous!  I think I'll keep the stereo, bags and "other extras."   :2vrolijk_21:

If he dusted you that bad I bet he was power shifting.  You have to be willing to throttle the you know what out of your bike if you want to keep up or stay ahead.  I know when I power shift, which is seldom, I can get 2nd gear rubber too.  Don't like to do it much, have a fear of missing a gear and tearing the crap out of the bike.

When I win the lottery, I'll give up the piston driven stuff and get a turbine.  I think if a guy had big enough stones the V12 would be in the dust  :cherry:

OK I'm feeling a little stupid so here goes, what is the proper procedure for power shifting?

there is a lot of verbal fog around this, so beware of reading to much about it  ;)

Usually "power-shifting" means up shifting without engaging - or at least without fully engaging - the clutch.

You may have observed gears can be changed without engaging the clutch if done with some ease and play with the throttle - if you happened to experience a clutch failure  ::)

With up-shifting in higher revs it is sufficient to just ease throttle down a bit for a tiny moment to let the higher gear "slip in" (needs some practice and an "light foot"  ;)), no clutch needed. If it's done smoothly damage to the transmission is minimal to none. But

1. never even think of doing so with down-shifting!

2. do the practicing with someone else's bike  ;D

In the end this gives you just some little advance over "conventional" shifting as he transmission is never fully disengaged. Very valuable especially when up-shifting while cornering.

But there are many different views about this topic ...

was just looking at the turbine powered bike and was just thinking about it's ridability.
there's no stone screen/intake filter. how,s that engine gonna breath without injesting road dibris that the front tire is undoubtedy kicking up. one stone the size of a marble is gonna play hell with that engine. next obversation is the close proximity of the exhaust stack to the road negating any lean angle at all.
i realize that a turbine engine on a street bike is probably not practacle, but if someone were to build a bike like that, at least make it so it could be concievably ridden.
probably built for just WOW factor.

YES,  you can (skip) using the clutch as (one way),  but the most typical way is to leave the throttle WFO all the way thru the race.   :cherry: That would mean "Wide fuc*** open" for those of you from Rio Linda.  Then you snatch the clutch quickly as you stab the shifter while the throttle never is backed off at all.
