Need Advice (PAINT)
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:31:47 PM »

Last night I took my 2002 Road King Tribal for its last ride with my local HOG chapter (sold it on eBay and the buyer picked her up this morning) and one of the RC's mentioned the problem on the paint.

I really like the 04 Black and Blue, if I knew that i was going to have this trouble, I would of bought the 04 i was looking at, but wanted a new SE, Im sure you understand, thats just me. Cant tell you what to do, but the paint is an issue, and untill someone shows me one that is correct, then I doubt one exists. Another poster just got one Sat,. and the same paint issue.

btw, there are a couple of nice black and blue 04' 's on here with low miles for sale. Good luck whatever you decide. And also Welcome.

Welcome jvc58dke,
I know you must be very anxious about your next bike. [smiley=confused5.gif]
I had about a 6 months wait to get my 2006 in Haze but I am glad I waited. I sure love this new bike. I too was worried about possible paint issues but so far i have none.
I am also sorry that cigarmike and others have paint problems but I have seen crimson/slate bikes in this area with no paint problems. If you look at the poll you can see that there are some without problems that have responded and I have seen photos too with no problems.
If I was in your place I would seriously ask myself several questions before making a final decision.
Does the 2006 bike suite your riding needs and would you use or appreciate all the features or is it overkill? (Such as CB/Intercom ,heated grips, heated seats etc.)
Would you miss the Ultra features if you didn't have them?
Would you modify either bike or would you keep it stock? If so what would you modify? Maybe a used bike would already have the mods?
Are you comfortable buying a used bike? Do you know it's maintenance and damage record? Are you aware of any recalls or defects for that paticular model year? (Look at some post here for problems or things the owners change on the year you want.)
As far as the 2005 the tourpack is removeable and there were several colors for that year so if you choose to get one you don't have to look like your friend.
If possible consider waiting until the new bike comes in and take a chance? You could either get it anyway if it has bad paint and try to get it replaced if you think H-D will correct the problem or you could then refuse to accept the bike until it's fixed or at that time look at used bikes.
Or on the other hand you could buy a used bike and ride it until the new one arrives then decide to trade the used one in for new if you prefer the 2006.
Or like some of the CVO-OCD folks here you could keep your older CVO bike and keep the new one too.
I considered buying a used 2005 while I waited for the 2006 and the prices were just as much as the 2006. I decided why buy used with less features and an unknown history so I just waited.

You have seen a Black and Slate one with no problems???, That would be great, that would make our case agaisnt Harley very strong for a re-call, according to the attorney I spoke with today. I beg to see one of the voters who checked the "nothing wrong ' with my Black Crimson SE box on the poll bikes, does anyone here actually know who these guys are that voted?? Is it possible that its someone from Harley signing up and voting just for that reason???..... Untill I see it, I cant believe it, the parts are all painted by the same shop, and the same way. if they changed it, then thats good too, thats admitting guilt. If you can, put one of us in touch with the perfect painted black ones if you can, it would be most helpfull, (I wish I had waited for a Haze one now too ) :(

Thanks to all for your thoughts....fortunately the dealer I'm working with in Nebraska has been pretty good so far.  However, I'm still kind of leaning towards letting that one go....getting an '04 (really like the black/blue paint)....and waiting till 07 to see if they fix the issue....will search the boards here for an 04....came home today to a garage without a bike...wanted to cry

Man that blue is gorgeous but I wouldn't bo to an '04 from my '06.  Not for $34k or even $30k.

I'm in great shape with the SE Ultra and love the extras offered by it for two up riding.  '04 no Warranty, big bucks, dig in and go for the '06 and hold on.  Screw the paint deal, my Blk Crimson is fine.  Built late November and Delivered at Xmas.

Hey, anybody seen the stock lately?

It's all about $$$$$.

The only way to get results is to continually follow up on your issue with the customer hot line at MoCo and don't give up.  If everyone is commited to resolution on the customer end it will get handled at the MoCo end, even if the wait is painfully slow.

but internet boards can sometimes take on a gang like mentality. One guy has a small problem, then another, next think you know there are hundreds. But out in the mainstream, most customers are happy campers.

First of all, I would urge you to consider your audience before addressing them. In this case a group of CVO owners (that is people who buy $30,000.00 + motorcycle) do not really qualify as

Now, If I were to flame that post too....Id be pileing on, and therefore gang mentality accusations might be headed my way............so I won't. You do however, sound pretty much like the salesman that sold me the bike, the service manager who tried to calm me down, and also like Reps who tried to say I am seeing things that dont exist. You sure you dont work for HD ???

Wow guys, I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers. JVC asked for a little advice, so I gave my opinions. That's what these boards are for, arent' they?

SE Ultra, since you seemed the most offended, I will apologize for saying anything that you might think was directed at anyone here. It was not. My comment about internet boards was a generalization. Meaning all boards combined. One of the things I like most about this particular board is the absence of a lot of that crap. Mostly, I was trying to say that my experiences with HD have been positive, any and all warranty issues have been taken care of. Did I have to pursue it, yes. If my bike shows up with bad paint, I'll be right in line with everyone else complaining and wanting it repaired. I mearly tried to show the other side of the coin.  Nuf said.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
