10 SEUC Break In
« on: May 07, 2010, 09:57:36 AM »

I have just about 550 miles on my new Ultra and I have developed this Clacking noise that only goes away when you pull in the clutch. I never had this issue on my 08 SEUC and the noise is really bugging me. My thoughts are to drain all three holes and put in Redline and Amsoil in the motor. Anyone else ever change out the factory fluids at 500 miles on a new bike. Anyone have any thoughts on what is making that Clacking noise when the bike is idling in neutral.

I have heard of several others changing out fluids at low mileage. My 08 was doing that until fluids changed at 950 miles. I also had clutch issues until then, hard to find neutral, louder than normal gear engagement. No problems after.

PS Pics of the new ride???

Bubblehead I will post pics tonight after I change fluids and put a few more miles on bike. It's a Riptide Blue/Titanium Dust Ultra.

DB, I know that's the bike I would like to get. So other than the noise what are your impressions so far? Coming from a 08 to a 10, especially interested in handling differances, brake dive, and such. I owned a 05 Eglide classic before the SERK,  but have not tried the new frame configuration.

Bubblehead, What a huge difference with the new frame. It is way more solid in turns and on grooves and more steady at highway speeds. My 08 was a Great Bike also and I had the bagger brace on it but this new 10 is far more sturdy with the new frame!! If I could just figure out this Clacking noise!!!!!!!!

Check the horn assembly fastener  underneath the chrome cover.

Redline is good Stuff I now have it in all 3 holes.

Just a little theory, and no first hand facts, but you might find that your primary tensioner is a little "slack" in handling it's job.  Harley primary chains probably stretch more in the first 500 miles than they do in the next 20,000 miles, as anyone who did their own manual chain adjustments in the old days can attest.  If the chain stretches and the auto tensioner doesn't ratchet properly to take up the new slack, I could see this causing a slapping or ticking noise.  And failure of the tensioner to adjust has been reported as a verified problem by some folks.

If it doesn't resolve by itself, have the dealer pull the outer primary cover and check the tensioner.  If that isn't the problem, check out the clutch.  With a hydraulic clutch there shouldn't be any free play that could cause your symptoms, but with all the issues H-D seems to have with their CVO hydraulic clutch, who knows?  Does your clutch seem to drag with the lever against the grip, and engage almost immediately as you start to release the lever?  If so, you may have air in the system.  A thorough bleeding might be all you need.   :nixweiss:

Aint worried....The warped front rotors and dust emitting pads are crampin me up a little more.   >:(

Got them to replace the mirrors again if that is any consolation.   :D

I hope it dont grenade until the mirrors get in, dont really wanna go near the place......Oh the heated seat quit, still has some detonation issues two up, cant put right leg down at stops, jeans ignite...Wish Jim's was closer but 3034 miles each way is a stretch.   ::)

May go to Doc's when he gets a package together, get the flow right in the heads, new cams...And hope that don't scissor the flywheel... :D

Ya know just another Harley... >:(

DB, my 2010 had the clacking noise until I changed the transmission to Amsoil gear oil at 1000 miles.  The noise went away and as of 3600 miles, it has not come back.

Good luck with it.
