Orange Safety Vest
« on: May 07, 2010, 11:09:54 AM »

Does anyone wear one of these?

If so, where did you get it and does it flop around in the wind?

Harley shop.

No.

Added reflective HOG Club patch.  Wear it mostly when leading group rides, but other times too when the urge strikes.

I decided to buy it after seeing a couple on an ultra wearing blaze orange in Daytona this year.  Was really suprised how they stood out from the background.  Being seen is a good thing.

I believe ICON makes a vest that is Military base approved and even has a clear pocket for Military ID. many riders in this area use it and it can be purchased from Cycle Gear.

At least that's not fugly and doesn't look like it would be a pain flapping all over the place. Maybie if I had a orange bike. For now I'll stick too my HD leather jacket. The back has a large reflective emblem embroidered on it.

Harley makes a mesh jacket in safety orange with reflective strips on front and reflective emblem on the back.  I have one waiting at my house when I get home tomorrow.  Also accepts armor in shoulder/elbows.

Here's a link to the one I bought.  I have a grey one already, and can wear it into the 90s in Alabama summers.

I was eye'ing the model that HD is selling now.  Seemed like it would get really hot, deffinately didn't seem breatheable or lightweight.  However I want to find one that will work, can't be a bad thing.

They've got a couple of blaze orange summer jackets.....both come with the armor already installed and are 'breathable' for hot weather.  If you've never used one of these, they're great for keeping the sun off and actually keep you cooler on the hot summer rides as long as you are moving.  But, when you stop you want to take it off right away.  spyder

I wear the HD hi- vis vest over my rain gear, on tour when I am not personally wear I have it draped over my luggage bag so it's visible to those behind me.

I wrap this orange thing around me when I ride, Seems to stand out pretty good in traffic!

I ALWAYS thought it was asinine to make military members wear bright colors in the day time and reflective gear at night. I'm short enough that when I have a pack on my bike you can't see anything except the tops of my shoulders and my helmet. If they don't see my 850 lb FLHX then they won't see my icon vest. I wonder if there are any studies that show that these "vests" work.

Yep, it's been proven that bright colors in vehicles are safer yet most cars are silver, white, or black.  And of course we know that most Harleys are black.  ;) har.  spyder

not the colors of vehicles, there have been many good studies done on this, I'm talking about the vests in particular or bright clothing being worn on a motorcycle making them any more visible and therefor safe.

Yes there have been studies about the bright vests. That's why DOT workers wear them. The eye will naturally spot these types of colors at a greater speed than others. If someone spots you just half a second sooner it could save your life. Do I wear one honestly no, but I am going to in any kind of limited visibility situation from now on (night, overcast) Don't underestimate the power of being seen. JMHO

Some idiots on the road can not even see an 18 wheeled Peterbuilt coming, so why do you think that a vest with two square feet of orange would help? When they have their phone stuck in their ear, they pull out in front of you as they are looking you in the eye. I have been hit from behind while sitting at a stop sign two times in my life, once in 1982 and once in 1990. Both times the light was red and the idiot's did not see me OR THE STOP LIGHT THAT WAS RED FOR OVER 30 SECONDS BEFORE I WAS HIT. One of the drivers had a road map streched out over the sreering wheel trying to determine which way to turn. If they can not see you sitting on a bike, I doubt they will notice a little bit of orange on your back. IMO

You can buy a decent quality safety vest (orange or bright yellowish-green) for $10-$15, at Wal-Mart.
