Best Practices reinstalling windshield
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:36:44 PM »

Would anyone have ideas on how not to crack the windshield when reinstalling it?
I always under tighten the 3 bolts and replace the foam gasket each time I remove the windshield.  However I think the dealer over tightened the bolts.
Thanks

I'm trying to visualize actually cracking my windshield before stripping the inserts or pulling them out, and I don't see how that could happen unless the edge of the shield was sitting up on the edge of one of the threaded inserts.  As is true of most things, it always helps to make certain everything is aligned properly before cranking down the fasteners.

Make sure you use a torque wrench if you don't have the "feel" for the correct torque, the spec is 25-30 inch pounds, which isn't much.  If you don't have an inch pound torque wrench, use a nut driver (screwdriver) to limit the torque instead of cranking it down with a regular wrench.

what model bike?  i have had mine off many times on the road glide with the worst happening, a dropped wellnut in the fairing.  Do the middle first snug but not tight and then go left right left right from outboard to in.   then go back and snug them up per specs . It's a feel thing and over tightening is not good.

If everything is lined up and you just snug the mounting screws down,( 25 in lbs) it would be almost impossible to crack a decent windshield.

I have an 2004 FLHTCSE, must have been the dealer, I always use a torque wrench. Always seems to happen to the center eyelet, it only started after I had dealer work and didnt notice it until I had to remove the fairing. I'm gonna keep the cracked shield and install it before having dealer work done.
Thanks!
