Speedometer Calibration ThunderMax ECM
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:14:33 AM »

I don't know if my speedometer is off after installing a ThunderMax ECM.  I used the recommended setting off 44750 which is for a 2010 Softail. There are a bunch of different tire sizes available depending on which Softail you're talking about. I calculated the different diameters and they do vary slightly form 25.45 to 25.87 on the CVO Convertible.  Has anybody had to tweak it?  I haven't had a chance to verify it against mile markers and a stop watch.  Any thoughts?

I posted this under CVO Softail Convertible because it's specific to the convertible and not a general ECM question.

If you consider that the distance traveled per revolution for the two tire sizes mentioned differs by less than 2%, I don't see any reason for concern.  A 2% variation at 60 mph would result in a difference in speedometer reading of 1.2 mph.  In other words, it's not significant enough to worry about, and is well within the normal tolerance for speedometers.  If you want to do a quick check to ease your mind, just have a friend pace you on a four lane highway with a car held at exactly 60 mph.

Look at it this way, the difference in diameter you mentioned isn't much more than the difference between a brand new tire and one that is worn down to the tread wear indicators.

Yea I guess you're right. It's not much difference.  I never calculated out the percentages.  Good idea.

Tell me.. How does she run on the T-Max. Are you happy with the performance gains (if any)?

I only have a few hundred miles on it so far, so I haven't opened it up yet. It does feel a lot stronger and runs much smoother. It also does spit and stutter like it used to with the stock ECM and mufflers. The other plus is that it is running cooler. I haven't had a hot day to see how high the oil temperature gets but right now it's around 200 degrees maximum on a 72 degree day.

I trust you meant "doesn't"..

I had a T-Max on my Low Rider and loved it!! I think I'll be going that route on the ConV.

What map did you use? I'm thinking about Map 527 as the base.

Yes I meant doesn't.  I used 526 map. I used that one because I have stock head pipes.  I only changed the mufflers. I tried 413 originally and it didn't run as well. I read more and realized I had picked the wrong one. 413 is for after market head pipes. I'm just enabling the deceleration fuel cut to cut back on the popping on deceleration. I'm very happy so far.

I have a GPS and it's reading about 4-5 mph higher than the speedometer at 55mph. So now I'm going to tweak it. I read in the Thunder Max manual that you can fine tune the speedometer settings without a computer hooked up. I'll give it a try. I'll keep you posted on how I make out.

RCFLYER,

Where did you see that the speedo calibration for the CVO should be 44750?

I have mine set at 42450 and it seems right on using my hand held GPS.

I have attached a excel speedo calibration calculator I got from Zippers.

Hope this helps.

It came with my Thunder Max install instructions and tech support said that was the setting for a 2010 Softail. Your setting is for earlier models (2007-2009). Please see attached. I'll give it a shot with 42450 and post the results. Thanks for the reply and the spreadsheet.

I changed by speedometer setting to 42450 and now it's dead on. The manual is probably for all Softails except CVO. So far it's running great and I rode today (82 degrees) and the oil temperature never got above 200.

Curious as to how you are measuring the oil temp. I have the analog thermometer dipstick and 200 seems really low and almost impossible. At 200 you would not burn off condensation and your oil will be contaminated, so 200 is not a good thing at all. 212 would be optimal.
