Tie Down Points for SERG
« on: May 14, 2010, 04:23:38 PM »

I have never trailered a bike but this summer will need to do so.  I have  an 09' SERG with MoCo hard lowers.  I have spent a lot of time looking at the bike but can't figure out the tie down points.  The lowers seem to be screwing with what would be my thoughts on the tie down points.  Can the group help me out on this?  Thanks much.

I have always ran the tie-down though the front forks and have never had an issue.  I was warned by the dealer not to tie down to the handle bars due to fork compression; might hit a bump and the forks compress and the front tire slips.

I have used the frame where the crash bar bolts on.  2 straps,  one out the right side and one out the left.   Also snug the rear somehow so it dont dance side-to-side on you.

I use 18" nylon rope tied into a loop as a strap around the lower tree. Ratchet straps connect to the loops. in the rear I use the footpegs. I also have a wheel chock for the front wheel. No need to compress the suspension with the straps. Good Luck

I use my wheel chock and tie down to the engine guards. I would say I go on a 45 degree angle too. This gives it a little forward pressure and keeps her nice and tight.  Don't forget to check your straps a few miles down the road. Just to make sure it did not settle and loosen up on ya.

i use a wheel chock also and tie down from the handle bars at about 30 degrees going forward toward the chock ... i have never had to tie the rear down only the front with the wheel chock..... i agree with the key being to check if it loosens up...dont want to loose the scoot

Just did this last month.  Same bike, same lowers.

I used Pro Taper tie down (they have the spft tie built in to them).  I was able to get the tie between the lowers and the crash bar.  Tied down to hard points at approximately 45 degrees forward.  I always compress the forks as much as possible.

I usually run rear ties as a precaution.  This time I went to my hitch.  Not sure what you can see, but here is the only pic I have.

I am going to be trailering my new to me FLTRSE3 home Saturday (assuming I don't have any hiccups with the bank and all) on a U-Haul motorcycle trailer. I am not sure what the layout of the trailer is and I found a couple of threads stating not to used the handle bars. I have used Canyon Dancers on bikes for years without any issues. But I guess I won't for this. I do have some soft-ties as well. I don't have the bike to look at....yet. The lower triple tree is exposed enough to loop the soft-tie around and attach the ratchet hook and go forward without clearance issues with the fairing or fender? What about the frame near the upper mount of the crash bars?

Have trailered off and on for 35 years, so I have a little experience. Always used the engine guard as the main tie point on my 05 RG. Did the same with my 09 SERG until the weld to the top support broke while trailering. Was told by dealership svc. mgr. that with the new touring frames, the engine guard had actually been engineered to break away under severe conditions. As mine did that, I now use the lower tree. No problems there. Condor chock is a big plus also.

Interesting,I too have used the engine guard for many years. Which part of the lower tree do you use?  Pics would help us. Thanks,

Wyoguy, if you own the trailer then i would use the "Roberts system" WWW.bikersgostrapless.com

This is the only way i have trailered  my Harley's ! They annually go to Vegas from Kansas and back ,as well as a trip to So-cal and back ,Stugis and back.No straps ,no fuss ,and it takes almost 2 minutes to load or unload from the trailer.!!

Over the top of the black wind deflector that is internal to the fairing. Wind deflector is the one that chrome is an option for.

Looked at those Condor Chocks.  Can we use these on a 09 SERG with the rear of the front fender hanging down so far?

I was concerned about clearance also, but doesn't come close to being an issue. Chock is adjustable for wheel size and I think mine is on the second largest tire/wheel setup. Good luck.

I have a Condor chock and it works great on my 09 SERG.
