Air cargo a bike from Europe to USA ?
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:33:01 AM »

Hello European fellows,

I plan a trip to US next year and looking for any info or experience in shipping a bike to US from Europe via air cargo. Sea shipping is not really an alternative since it takes between 4 and 6 weeks per trip.

I've read an old thread where Louis mentioned "When combined with a tour we usually pay around 1,500 Euro roundtrip for a bike shipped from Germany into the U.S. and back, all docs and handling included".

Any feedback and info from those who have air cargo their bike will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Greetings   Laurent

Why not use the H-D H.O.G. fly and ride? Save all that shipping money.

Hello Laurent,

As I mentioned, if you book a guided tour (2 or 3 weeks) you can get quite good air cargo rates, inclusive of handling. If you send it separately, you need to use an international freight forwarder like DHL and it may run up to 3.000 Euros. If you speak German, check out this site, http://www.bikeworld-travel.de/ , very helpful information there.

Good luck,
Louis

the costs of shipping your bike need to be weighed up against the rental costs, obviously if you intend more than a 3week stay in USA then shipping would become a cheaper alternative

Hello!

Thank you all for your informations and pointers. As we plan a 3-4 weeks journey we will weight the cost of rental vs cost of shipping. The german web site is a good souce of information and proposed packages looks cool. The HOG Fly&Drive is also an alternative.

Thank you for your time. I'll keep you posted on alternatives available by the time. At least this time I'm well ahead of deadlines in this project  ;D
