darn it, head gasket leak
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:40:29 PM »

I thought my big bore build went great until I saw oil all over my front cylinder right where the head gasket is after about 250 miles on build.
I used those darn copper gaskets off Big Boyz may have been a mistake. I ordered some Cometic head gaskets but damn that's going
to be a lot of work.

Going to change them both or just the front that's leaking?  Front is easier than the back.  Put it in perspective though.  It's not an oil leak.  It's an excuse to spend a nice Saturday afternoon in the garage with a game on the radio being good to the bike. :2vrolijk_21:

I'll do both just so I don't have to do it again a month from now during prime riding season.
The rear also has what appears to be a little oil around the head gasket in one spot about 1 inch long.
The front one actually has oil dripping down the fins.

I torqued those to spec just as instructed in the sheet that came with the copper head gaskets.
Supposed to be impossible to blow, guess not.

Oh well.....  Enjoy the time in the shop with the bike.  Got a quick disconnect on the crossover fuel line to make tank removal a snap?

Torque those Cometic's down at 10, 20, then a 1/4 bolt turn. (comes out at just about 42 ft/lbs.)

Thanks for the info, are you supposed to cut out the rivets on the Cometics or leave them?

Attached is the Cometic torque procedure.  Have never had an issue....   :2vrolijk_21:

With stock heads, you do not have to trim the rivets...

I have SE MCR performance heads so does that mean I should remove the rivets?

No, you don't have to remove the rivets with the SE MCR heads...

It would be really really obvious if you had to remove the rivets...  As long as the rivets clear the cylinder/cylinder head joint faces when the gaskets are in position, they are fine.  With some aftermarket heads, you need to remove them, but with the majority of heads you don't need to remove them..

Thanks I read somewhere that you did. I don't have gaskets in hand yet, probably obvious when I do.

They moved the rivet location a while back. No worries.

Get two fittings....and make a couple of quick disconnect fuel tank drain lines!   :2vrolijk_21:

I don't get credit for coming up with it.  Used to be a company that offered a manufactured line in the aftermarket.  They charged an almost obscene amount for it.  But it was braided with machine crimps and did exactly what it was supposed to.  Having a quick coupler in that line makes getting the tank off literally less than a ten minute chore.  Have done that little task to every bike I've ever had with a crossover.

The old aftermarket line you can't get anymore did look ok.  If memory serves they charged $80-90 for it though.  Clearance racks were good places though.

Lots of places to get decent quick couplers in all three common sizes though.  By themselves for $40-ish all over eBay the last couple times I've needed one.  Installed you really don't notice they're even in place.  Sure is nice to lean over the tank and pop it apart though.  This is the home made version all hidden away.
