Great post, very detailed pictures. Seeing this I am happy my bike came with Zumo already in place. And yes, to me it is also the best location for the GPS unit.

Ride safely,

Dude,
Outstanding pics!  Just what the DR. ordered.  Did ya drill the holes from the inside of the fairing?  Thanks for the help.
Mike

Mike,
I drilled the 2 bolt holes from inside the fairing using the retainer as a guide.  The retainer has a sweet spot when aligned properly with the fairing.  I drilled 1/4" holes but if I did it again I'd make em 9/32" just for a little slop.  The 5/8" hole I bored for the wiring was done from outside the fairing.  I wanted to be centered on the flange of the fairing and it worked out.  Remember to round off the edges or protect the wires with a grommet or some other device.

looks like this setup uses the standard AMPS hole pattern, in theory it should work for any GPS or any other device that uses the standard hole pattern, makes the thought of upgrading to a a future GPS less of a concern

So, tell us how it is to use while riding.
Is it easy to reach?
How about vibration? I had the older HD GPS mounted to the fairing and a low RPMs it would shake very badly.
I like my GPS on the right side. Is there any chance the retainer bracket could be modified to work on the right side?

Jo,
The only reason I got the dashpad with the holes was to allow reinstallation of the original if I chose to remove the mount.
Eric
This is exactly why I just purchased the pad made for the mount with all the holes drilled and cut for me. When I sell the bike, the GPS is going with me

The mounting is exactly what I've been looking for.  Easy to reach, close to the line of sight so I'm not overly distracted trying to take a quick look, and least vibration of all the mountings I've used on any of my bikes.  Not to mention is the cleanest looking IMO.

The current pieces aren't compatible with moving it to the right side and I can't see modifying them to do this.  >:( :-\ :nixweiss:

 :soapbox: :soapbox:

Parts backordered until after my 15 day trip in June.

Guess the handle bars will just have to work.  Didn't want to repalce my brand new 550 (under warranty).

great solution.

It will sell.

The dashpad I used, 57885-10, does not come with the chrome trim.  I'll look up the parts you'd need to install the dashpad on the SG.  Have you looked at the HD fairing mounts that are available for use without the dashpad?

92366-08 for Zumo 550
or
92238-09 for Zumo 660, MSRP 39.95 for either.

Terry,
Looks like you'd need these parts in addition to what I previously posted
57842-06  TRIM, dash pad
4569         SCREW (2), mounts trim to dash pad
3652         SCREW (2), mounts dash pad to inner fairing
6837M       WASHER (2), mounts dash pad to inner fairing
58318-05   TEMPLATE, target drilling inner fairing holes for dash pad
and here's a link for dashpad install instructions http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J03804.pdf

Would this mount set up work with a HogTunes Tweeter Pod installed??  It looks like from the great pictures posted of the install that it would not as it appears it would mount directly where the tweeter is located.
