Is key FOB waterproof?
« on: May 23, 2010, 12:27:37 PM »

I'm going on a long trip this summer and am wondering what to do with my extra key and FOB?  Someone said they leave it home and have it overnighted is necessary. Can't really keep in on the bike, cuz the bike could be stolen if I'm away from it.  Wondering if they are waterproof, as I was going to have my wife sew in inside my pant leg with a denim patch patch sewn all the way around. That way I always have it with me and can cut it out if needed. But this will be the only pair of jeans I will have with me and need to wash them sometime, so will it tolerate the washing machine?  Anybody have any experience with this, or any good ideas of where to keep it?  Let's hear them.

I would doubt that is could withstand anything more than a light misting of water. I would say leave the extra home and the overnight thing. Aren't the security systems still able to be manually overridden?

You can pack an extra fob on the bike.  Just wrap it in aluminum foil.  It will thus not disarm the alarm.

Hang tight for a few more years and we'll have biometric security systems so you won't need to worry about no stinkin' fob.  I forsee walking up to your bike and placing your thumb on a print reader, or staring into a lens for a retina scan, or spitting on the gas cap for an instant DNA match, or maybe even a nice implantable chip like we use on our dogs.  Don't forget to get the chip removed from the previous owner if you buy a used bike.

The fob isn't waterproof.  Like Greg mentioned, wrap it in aluminum foil to keep the security module from reading it, then place it in a nice little ZipLoc bag and stash it with your luggage.  If you want to make sure no one mess's with it, tuck it in with the dirty underwear.

I don't think it's waterproof. My wife rides her own and is usually with me. She carries my extra key and keyfob and I carry hers. Of course this only works if your wife rides here own.

I don't know that it's waterproof, but my wife washed mine in my jeans the other day.  I popped it open, not a speck of water inside.  And it still works.

Learn the turn signal code and don't even take the thing.  It's not that tough once you do it once or twice.

Why don't you inplant it in your chest like a pacemaker.  Sounds easier than the whole jean thing  ;)  I would take the spare because you don't ever want to waste a day waiting for UPS
