Emergency stereo help! Please!
« on: May 28, 2010, 07:29:44 PM »

OK, big trip in a week. Stereo, stock am/fm/cas. unit, hog tunes speakers, 2000 fltrsei. Interference pops up when warm to un-useable levels. Goes away instantly when I pull clutch and let off gas. It will come right back if I goose it with the clutch in. Sensor going out maybe? anyone ever heard or seen this before? I DO NOT want to go for an 8 day ride with no tunes!

Obviously getting interference from somewhere that varies with engine speed.  Given their age (time to have replaced them by now on just general principles) first thing I'd do is replace the plug wires.  Would also check the antenna wire to make sure its shielding hasn't cracked open somewhere or might be loose in the back of the radio.

Those are the easiest/cheapest solutions so go after them first.  After that just have to dig deeper.

I don't relish pulling the tank to get at those dang wires. Harley should have done something else with that crossover....

Its some kind of ground problem. could b a sotter joint inside the radio ? could be a bad plug wire ? do you have am reception ? if not could be antenna problem.

If it happened all of a sudden it prolly is inside the radio. soooo many things it could be. good luck.

Simple things first of course.  Check the antenna wire.  Loose at ground connections, loose on radio, broken insulator.  Could always pick up one of those small inside the fairing antennas and use it for the trip.  They're cheap and work surprising well and take 12 seconds to install.

You can change the wires without dealing with the fuel crossover though.  Especially if you've got an extra pair of hands.  Unbolt it front and rear.  Put something between the tank/dash and nacelle.  Lean it up and forward.  There is room to get your hands in there and do the wires.

Thanks for the input. I have checked out the grounds and ant. / spkr connections. All good. I have installed a hidden ant., reception is great all around. I spose I will have to dive into those plug wires.

May or may not be it.  But it's the next easiest/cheapest thing to try.  Will keep my finger crossed for you.

Are you using radio suppression spark plugs? Performance plugs without a "R" in it's part # can cause radio interferance when the engine is under load. Plug wires are another possible demon. Radio noise that varies with RPM and is loudest when a load is on the engine is usually ignition related.

Well, it's been a while, but here we go again. I installed the new plugs and new sc wires and left for my trip. No joy. Now that the trip is over and I have gotten caught up around here and work I will tackle it again.
I am now convinced it is temp related, and getting worse. Cold all is good. as the day heats up it cuts out. If I shut it down for a bit and refire it will work for a few. In the current weather it will work ok on ther way to work when it is 60 or so out, but not for chit on the way home, 80 - 90 degrees. Internal radio problem? Bad solder run? cracked board? Do I dare open it up and try to find a microscopic crack and resolder it?

Sorry, I just pushed this back to the top, then noticed the title. It is no longer a rush, as my trip is over. Great trip, bad tunes! Can I change the name of this thread, or just make a new one?

Go back to the first post of the thread.  Choose "modify" in that post.  You can then edit either the body of the post or the thread title.

Give Tony of Iron Cross Radio a call. He has some very satisfied  CVOHARLEY customers.
