what mods will help the 01serg run cooler?
« on: May 29, 2010, 08:13:24 PM »

I don't think I really want to change the pipes.
What have most of the people here done?
The other day it was in the 90's, my air gauge
was showing over 100. Has anyone's gone over the 120?

The ambient air temp gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Don't use it for much more than filling the hole in the dash.   Come warm weather count on having the fairing lowers off. It gets warm behind those lowers.

Aside from needing to take the lowers off in warm weather these engines weren't notorious for running overly hot.  Obviously anything you do toward cooling the system from its baseline will make some difference.  But what are you experiencing now that is making you think it is excessively hot?

The only thing is the heat coming at me from the engine. But I did not want to stall from overheating, so I want to do some PM work.

Taking the lowers off for warmer weather will make a lot of difference.  Nothing will make much difference for putting about in traffic.

What are you seeing for oil temperatures?

Thats what the fan kit is for. Its for when you do get stuck in traffic. Just like a car radiator while you are moving you dont need a fan but once you stop thats when it kicks in to keep things cool. The same is true for a oil cooler. They are great as long as you are moving, but once stopped there is no air moving thru the cooler so the oil temp goes up.

The addition of air conditioning cools the incoming air via the intercooler...my oil temp today at 95 degrees with 4 hours saturation time read 222F at the max on the 09. Will work on the 01 :drink:

With the engine mods we've done (see in notes below), I went with twin ten roll jagg coolers. The bike now has 20K on it with NO over heating issues,
