09 SERG rear shocks??
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:53:00 PM »

I know this has been asked but thought I might get some new input. I really think something is wrong with the stock shocks. They are crap. Enough about that. They are not very stable even one up. I tip the scales at 265lbs. usually ride at 35 to 40lbs pressure and it still feels like its bottoming out sometimes. Have tried the presssure everywhere. Most of the riding is done 2 up wife is around 125lbs. this is where it gets impossible. Have a small bump in the pavement that I cross at 5 mph and it feels like the rim is hitting the road. running through curves at speed and hitting something small really upsets the bike almost like it is walking across the road. Not very comforting. I read the differing options and stuff that is out there. I would like to keep the sporty look but not at the sake of the ride and safety. My 07 SERK with bags and tour pack didn't do this. Need some help but i don't want it to ride like a hardtail either? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suspension tech, Progressive and Works seem to be the most popular in this crowd.  I went with ST and am very happy.  Also is nice not having to re-charge the shocks every so often.

You and I are the same size, and my results have been the same with my SERG. Love the bike, but wished it rode as well as my 05 fltri. Progressive 440's installed now, but still searching.

Sure would be nice if the moto co would join the rest of us in this century. And they wonder why they can't sell a sport bike??? Build a new frame with new geomerty and put 50 year old shock technology on it so it will ride and handle like crap. Well it does handle good in a straight line??????????? :orange:

You might want to up the air in the shocks, I believe the max. pressure on the 2009 shocks is 50 lbs.
Also I have noticed some feeling of road bumps too but attributed it to lower profile sidewall on the stock tires. (Price we pay for larger rims I guess?) You may want to go to a smaller rim so the tires can have a larger sidewall and in turn the tires can absorb the road shocks better?

Thanks, but trust me this is not a wheel or a sidewall issue. Its the piece of crap shocks that are on this bike. No progression , no preload. They are either too soft or immovable.no excuse on a great new frame for 30K

Was thinking your sidewall analysis made a lot of sense till I realized I had 18" on my 05. Was aware of the shocks max pressure, yet the old ones maxed at 20 lbs. I think and I never got passed 15.

I just purchased the Progressive 940's for SERG because I too was disappointed in the factory shocks. When removing the factory shocks I was amazed when oil/water mix came out the air lines. Wasn't happy with the mess on the driveway. But, the 940's work a hole lot better. I've rode about 300 miles and they seem to go over the bumps with alot better recoil. They also smothed out the ride on the uneven rodes. Now it takes a bad bump to make the bike bottom out. Got to get some more riding in to get them dialed in.

I'm still trying to dial mine in, but a big improvement over stock for sure.

I did bottom out bad riding 2 up, so I'm cranking up the pre-load by one turn, until all seems well. I ended up backing it up all the way to minimum, marking a reference point of the shock with a piece of tape, then keeping track of how many full turns I adjust it clockwise- I find this better than going by the little grooves.....I've got it to about 7 turns past minimum right now.

Mike

You might try these...
http://www.livescience.com/technology/090212-shock-absorbers.html

In fact, as crappy as Harley shocks are, the MOCO might want to use these shocks on all their bikes. That way, perhaps they could also put an end to the air cooled vs. wet motor speculation and just use the shocks to power the motorcycle.  :)

RIDING A WHOLE DIFFERENT BIKE..... PAID $524 FOR THE 940'S I THINK I PAID ABOUT $180 FOR THE RICOR'S.IT WILL BE THE BEST $800 YOU'LL SPEND TO GET A REAL GOOD RIDE OUT OF YOUR BIKE.

I also have Ricor Intiminators in the front. Put Works shocks on the rear. They are custom made for my weight (250) and my wife (? not even I am privileged with that) when we are 2-up. It has made an amazing difference. Very smooth and controlled, at any speed.

I'll second the new HD Progressives!  I installed them on mine and it was night and day difference.  Then I felt the jolt in the front so I took it in and had the front forks serviced with regular fork oil and not the heavy duty stuff.  The ride is much better and the wife likes it now.  Can't do much about the low profile tires so there is still a little stiffness in the ride.
