Phoenix, Az
« on: February 16, 2006, 09:58:12 PM »

To All,

Any good scenic rides around Phoenix or surrounding areas?
Going in March. Staying for 3 days.
How about roads to Grand Canyon, Utah, Las Vegas, etc...
What do ya'll recommend?

Thanks,

Flagstaff AZ is the closest town to the Grand Canyon. About 35 miles from the rim road. Phoenix is a big city in the desert. IMHO there's not a lot to recommend. Tuscon to the southeast is a better city and 45 miles from Tuscon is Tombstone which is cool (OK Coral, Boot Hill and all that) Nogales Mexico is another 40 or 50 miles south of Tombstone if you've never been to Mexico. Don't know where you're coming from, but I'd spend a night in Tombstone, head down to Nogales for a day the next day. Spend that night in Tuscon ride over to Flagstaff, do the GC and environs the next day and then head on to Vegas. If I have to tell you what to do and see in Vegas you need more help than I can offer.  :D

PS  past Vegas is Moab National Park Utah and the arches which are something to see  That's about a good 5 hours or so out of Vegas  Also you've got Hoover Dam 45 miles outside of Vegas  Take an Atlas and draw lines through the places I mentioned and see what you come up with for a route. If you've never seen the Southwest and are coming from the east you should also go through Alberquerqe (did I eff that up on sp?) New Mexico

Hey Nait can we get spell check added to this site  (nah that would take all the fun out of it wouldn't it)

Yup, ef'd up. Albuquerque if it matters.

Hacienda in Scottsdale has dinner rides on Friday nights and they have an overnight ride to Tucson on the 11th.

Not sure when you are there.

Sandia Peak Tramway, nice restaurant up there too or a more casual place for lunch.

http://www.sandiapeak.com/

There is also a new Casino and Resort out on the east side of town that would make a good stop for the night.

Check out Cyclerides.com.  They list day rides out of Phoenix.
Try Hwy. 60 East up to Show Low and back on 260 thru Payson.
Make sure you dress in layers... it'll be cold in the higher elevations.

Hey!  all the rides that have been suggested are great but if you decide to go to the grand Canyon, you need to ride thru Sedona, it's just off Hwy 17 south of Flagstaff. In my opinion it's got to be the prettiest place I've ever seen. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
