Headpipe Install
« on: June 09, 2010, 10:43:31 AM »

Going to chance headpipes on my 09 CVO Ultra. I've changed pipes before on older bikes like back in the 90's but not on any new ones. Anything I should be aware of before I start? Any special tools to make the job easier like o2 sensor removal etc.?
Thanks much.

Disconnect the O2 sensor before you try to remove them.  You do not want to damage the connection by twisting the wires going into the O2 sensor.  You have to cut some tie wraps but they are cheap.  Note the routing of the wires and color code of connector so you know which is front and which is back for reinstall to new pipe.

Dave29, Just in case you don't have one.  The tool to remove the 02 sensor from the pipe (it is a special socket) is available at most auto parts stores for about $9.00. I think HD wants about $30.00 for the same thing. There are mixed opinions about changing out the washers. I had a little problem getting the old washers off, but I felt better about my completed job knowing that they were torqued correctly with new washers.JMHO. CAHDBIKER

agree with cahdbiker about removal of use compression washers. definitely replace those and use an accurate torque wrench. did it myself. piece of cake. good luck

Torque specs. are how much? Also, do you put the sensors back in dry? I've become a big fan of high temp thread sealant. Doesn't harden and usually makes disassembly easier the next time. Should I use it in this application?
Thanks

Use a "light" coat of anti-seize lubricant and torque for an '09 was 30-44 ft-lbs (40.7-59.7 Nm).
