My first oil leak
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:13:58 AM »

Discovered a leak near the front exiting from the side stand bolt and another point parallel to it.  Hard to see exactly where it is coming from but i am guessing the oil cooler.  Anyone else have this problem on the 09 serg?

I did, it was from the oil cooler. Happened on the way home from the dealership on the day I bot it. It was a simple fix at the dealership.

My '09 SERG leaked right off the floor, or at least I found it the day after I brought it home.

Mine was leaking at the top plate on the cooler adapter between the motor housing and the filter.  There is a two bolt flat plate on top and my gasket was wasted.

I asked to have it fixed and they said they would have to order the gasket.  I went home and got out my gasket material and cut my own.  I used a light coat of #2 Permatex on both sides of the gasket, didn't want to take a chance of another leak.

That's the only leak on mine to date.

This would leak down onto the filter and then follow around to the bottom and when it dripped, it would be very near the Jiffy stand.  I would only see a drip or two when left overnight.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dan for the advice. Bike is at dealer. Dropped it off. I will ask them to look at the oil cooler.

Dealer replaced the adapter gasket brought it home and still leaks.  Same spot ,around where the jiffy stand  attaches.

Started after an oil change by the dealer.

Any suggestions ?

Residue from the oil change lay in the oil cooler.  :nixweiss:

Sorry to hear.  I've had zero leaks, almost 20k on the bike.

My first leak was at 7k, oil cooler adapter gasket. Fixed it myself. Quicker than taking it to the dealer. I did notice that the new gasket was thicker. The service manager in Boise, Idaho told me he had replaced a few and he thought that was where the leak was coming from. I only lost about a half a quart in 2k but it sure made a mess.
I waited untill I got back home from our annual out west trip. Thats the only issue with the bike. Absolutely love it.

If you were actually leaking a quart in 500 you could not help but know it.  There would be puddles.  That's a lot of oil to leak.  It simply couldn't be unseen.  If there's that much oil disappearing it's going through the engine somewhere.

Trust me this one has baffled two dealerships on where the oil is going. I just got it back and they replaced the gasket at the plate between the oil filter and hose connection. I haven't been out on the bike too much since the fix to test the fix.

There has never been a puddle in my garage or under it when I am away from home. You can see a residue trail down the kickstand, but it never accumulates. The dealer filled it before I went on a trip and we both recorded the oil level. When I got part way through the trip I checked the dip stick and it was once again all the way down to the add line. It has been an infuriating experience.

IROAR I will let you know if the part number you gave me is the fix for my bike.

Because of the raining today , i did not want to ride to the dealer and checked it on my own , the two screws (fixing the clutch cover and fixing also the mounting of the header) are loosely , i tried to fasten them but it is difficult because you have to remove the header to reach them for tightening them really good , so i tried my best to tighten them as best as possible and will tell the dealer to check it again . My guess : the dealer removed the header when installing the supertuner and the dyno-runs and didn`t tighten these two screws . Well this is a easy fix and so it is a small problem.

Mine had a leak from the same spot AFTER I took it in for the first service. No problem now.

Seems to be fixed with tightening the two screws .
