Rainy Day Eyewear
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:45:57 AM »

Does anyone have a recommendation for googles that are effective when riding in the rain?

I have a pair of H-D glasses with a foam seal...in really wet conditions the rain gets inside and visibility goes to zero.

Everytime I've tried one of the 'foam sealed' glasses, they are great until the water invaribly seeps through, then it can't get out! Then it's worse than regular glasses. The last time I used a HD version, the areas between the lens and my eyes were filling up - those are now siting at the bottom of the junk drawer. I suspect there are some goggle types that have a better seal, but I just go to my full face helmet if I know I've got a long ride in the rain ahead of me.

I just wear my regular sunglasses or clear glasses and coat them with Rain-X. I went to the 95th anniversary in Mil. riding from Calif. Rained the entire way. The Rain-X worked great. No fogging, no poor visibility from the rain drops.

That (coating the lenses) will actually help more than might be expected before you try it.  Won't help with the other half of the problem though.  If water is getting to your face with only glasses some will get to your eyes.  That little low pressure area formed behind the lenses as you buzz down the road will suck some drops back there.  Appropriate height windshield helps tremendously with all of it course.  But in a heavy enough shower no glasses will keep all the drops off your eyeballs.

The water doesn't get in my eyes...it creeps in on the inside of the lenses and all bets are off. My windshield height allows me to look over and directly at the road. So, in the rain my face and glasses are fully exposed to the elements.

I rode around 300 miles in constant rain on Wednesday...on an Interstate...and fought this problem the whole way. Not fun. I don't mind riding in the rain...I can handle the conditions...but not being able to see drives me nuts.

I have found that the foam glasses always fog up as soon as it starts to rain. I think the Rain X idea was meant for regular glasses (no foam).

Agreed. That's what I noticed too. Found a face shield that will fit my half-helmet yesterday. Treated it with Rain-X and will give it a try. Since it is open I would expect it not to fog.

By the way...has anybody read the label on the Rain-X bottle? Makes you scared to try it on ANY plastics.

It's been a long time, since this topic has been visited, but I'm interested what you guys found out, did rain x work? As a half helmet guy, I also struggle with rain and keeping a clear view of the road.
