Bike stalling on 3 gear at 3000 rmp
« on: June 13, 2010, 03:40:01 PM »

My convertible has about 500km on it and it stalls when i throttle at about 3000rpm.  I spoke to my dealer who said it still needs more km's to break-in the engine.  Any input???

Your dealer is either avoiding a service request or is an idiot (or both).  There is nothing with "break in" that will cause what you're describing.

As Twolanerider noted, there is nothing there that more "break-in" will fix.  The engine should run smoothly without missing, hesitation, stalling, or any other bad behavior from the very first day.  You need to insist that the dealer fix this immediately, as stalling can be dangerous to your health.

As previously stated your dealer needs a brain as his does not work.

Took the bike in to the dealer again today.  They test drove it and told me that this is a normal behavior and that it should be resolved by changing the mufflers or the whole exhaust.  Any ideas guys?

In other circumstances I'd say get another dealer.  Not a likely option for you.  In your case after this second idiotic response by the dealership I'd call Harley consumer affairs itself.  State the issue, make it clear the bike isn't running safely and let them know your dealer says the unsafe condition is "normal."  See if the dealer then responds any differently after God calls them.

Absolutely incredible response...  Call the mothership and ask for consumer affairs or customer service.  The spiral continues..... :( >:(

Guys, in defense of my dealer, who happens to be a very close friend of mine, we finally figured out but didn't resolve the problem as of yet.  After reconnecting it to the HD diagnostic system it resulted in the following error "P1475 Exhaust Position Actuation Error".  They informed me it could be a number of things with the actuator and they need to perform a series of diagnostic tests to pin-point and resolve the issue; but it is not serious.

In defence of my dealer, who is a dear and close friend of mine, they are a very new dealership (less than a month old) in a country that just recently legalized motorcycles to the general public after a 28 year ban.  So I have to give them some space!

Please let me know if anyone knows anything about the above error.

The active exhaust kit is covered in detail on a H-D installation sheet that I'm attaching as a pdf.  Click on the attachment and it will open if you have a pdf reader installed on your computer.

Scroll down to pages 8, 9, and 10 for the diagnostic routine for the D1475 code.

Actually don't have a problem with that.  From a couple of different perspectives.  If it's known going in that the shop you're working with is both new and unfamiliar to their market and product you know and accept going in that there can be some growing pains.  So long as the dealer understands that also and is flexible, compensates in some way accordingly and isn't using his unfamiliarity as an excuse for lack of effort it's understandable and acceptable.

The second perspective is the larger scale.  Bringing something perceived as a western icon to a part of the world that would be wary is no small thing for reasons far beyond the dealership.  That makes it worth a little extra effort to build and maintain some relationships.

Hope it gets sorted out quickly and you're enjoying the ride.

Update:  After going through the whole checklist of things that could be wrong; it was finally determined that the EMC needs to be replaced.  The report was sent to Harley (US) and they sent an immediate replacement which should arrive within a couple of days.

Just think though; if you had them in dual it could be EMC2.  Einsteinian torque; that would rock :2cr_01: !
